Is it immoral to purchase bootleg media?

So I just recently purchased a CD off of eBay from a pretty highly reviewed seller. The CD I was looking to buy is really hard to come by, and I was astonished to see what a low price the guy was selling them for. I immediately reached out and asked if it was a copy or an original, and he said that he “didn’t sell counterfeit products”. He also said he was a disk jockey and had a ton of these CDs. So I thought that he might be legitimate, but I also had the thought that he could be lying to me. But I thought “well he told me it’s legit, and he said he was a disk jockey, so there’s a possibility it’s real.” So went ahead and bought it.

Later on, I looked at his “reviews” and some of his customers noted that the CDs were bootleg versions. I did not want to buy a bootleg version because I understand that is theft. That’s the whole reason I wanted to purchase an actual original CD. I could just as easily get the songs off the internet for free, but I understand that it is stealing. (The CD is not on iTunes btw 😭) I actually saw a different posting of the same CD and decided not to purchase that one because they had admited to it being a copy.

Now, I’m not sure what to do. There is a no return policy on the purchase so I don’t think I’d get my money back, even if I asked nicely. I did NOT want to purchase a COPY (aka bootleg aka stealing aka knowingly doing so is a sin!) of the CD, and I even messaged him to ask if it was legit and real. He assured me that it was not a copy. Anyway, I’ll eventually get the CD.

Based on past reviews, which I did not read until AFTER purchase indicate a high possibility of this being a copied version…(however I will probably not know for sure, even after I get it, unless the songs sound crappy 😒).

Question is this, is it moral for me to use the CD and enjoy it when I get it, even though it might be bootlegged?

(Side note - the picture of the inside cover of the CD says that it is a “promo” and “not for resale”…not sure what that means, anyone?? Maybe that it was distributed to radio stations or or something, but it’s still legit? 🤔)

If it says it was a promo, it sounds legit, not a copy. Yes, distributed to radio stations to provide promotion/advertising of an artist’s new work. You bought it, so enjoy it.

Now I’m just wondering what a “promo” is compared to an original. And often I’ll see “not for resale” on them. But I’m not sure what that means…I just don’t want to participate in the sale of stolen goods, ya know?

It could mean that when it first came out they were distributed free, not to be sold to the radio stations. But once the radio station doesn’t want them, they belong to the station/disc jockey for them to do what they want. They were never stolen.

Yay! Thanks for the clarification guys! 😁 Wasn’t sure what all that meant. Now I’m excited all over again to get my CD! Even if it is a promo…🤔:woman_shrugging:t3:😁 Oh btw…It’s Twenty One Pilots “Regional at Best”…BEST. BAND. EVER. 🤩😁

Not to be negative but it sounds like the Spirit is speaking to you. Are you too attached to this item? Perhaps the copy is perfectly legit but do you desire this too much? Is your desire healthy? I could be way off here but I just wanted to share. God bless.

What the heck is a CD? What is a disc jokey!? Did I just time travel and not know it!?

Yeah… I think you’re thinking a little too deeply about a fairly straightforward question.

Yeah… maybe my music taste is just too pedestrian, but so far I’ve yet to stump Amazon Music…
Haven’t bought a CD (or DVD for that matter) for at least a decade.

If you bought it in good faith then you are not guilty of any sin. However I would recommend that you avoid this person in the future.
There is the saying, fool me once shame on you - fool me twice shame on me.
