So I just recently purchased a CD off of eBay from a pretty highly reviewed seller. The CD I was looking to buy is really hard to come by, and I was astonished to see what a low price the guy was selling them for. I immediately reached out and asked if it was a copy or an original, and he said that he “didn’t sell counterfeit products”. He also said he was a disk jockey and had a ton of these CDs. So I thought that he might be legitimate, but I also had the thought that he could be lying to me. But I thought “well he told me it’s legit, and he said he was a disk jockey, so there’s a possibility it’s real.” So went ahead and bought it.
Later on, I looked at his “reviews” and some of his customers noted that the CDs were bootleg versions. I did not want to buy a bootleg version because I understand that is theft. That’s the whole reason I wanted to purchase an actual original CD. I could just as easily get the songs off the internet for free, but I understand that it is stealing. (The CD is not on iTunes btw
) I actually saw a different posting of the same CD and decided not to purchase that one because they had admited to it being a copy.
Now, I’m not sure what to do. There is a no return policy on the purchase so I don’t think I’d get my money back, even if I asked nicely. I did NOT want to purchase a COPY (aka bootleg aka stealing aka knowingly doing so is a sin!) of the CD, and I even messaged him to ask if it was legit and real. He assured me that it was not a copy. Anyway, I’ll eventually get the CD.
Based on past reviews, which I did not read until AFTER purchase indicate a high possibility of this being a copied version…(however I will probably not know for sure, even after I get it, unless the songs sound crappy
).
Question is this, is it moral for me to use the CD and enjoy it when I get it, even though it might be bootlegged?
(Side note - the picture of the inside cover of the CD says that it is a “promo” and “not for resale”…not sure what that means, anyone?? Maybe that it was distributed to radio stations or or something, but it’s still legit?
