Hello Buffalo,Does anyone yet see the correlation in cost to increasing our lifespan? Will it exponentially cost more for every year of increased lifespan? At what point will this pursuit consume all our resources?
If I remember correctly, in 1970 America spent 7% of our GNP on health care. In 2000 America spent about 23% of GNP on health care and at its present, technology driven, exponential growth it is expected that in 2050 America will spend 50% of its GNP on health care. This is why we commonly hear of the term health care crisis in America. American leaders know that the technology driven immense finantial demands of health care can easily bring America to financial ruin, no matter how strong America is, unless we make some difficult changes.
Church leaders are fighting to have all removal of artificial life support deemed murder. Can you imagine a future with tens of millions of people in commas living in medical units for hundreds of years because of the thought it would be murder to do anything else? This along with people taking medications to live hundreds of years beyond 120 years of life because they feel it would be mortal sin suicide not to do all they can do to stay alive as long as they can in any condition at any cost.
Church leaders are going to have to start focusing on the true reality of the awesome power of modern and future medicine to keep people alive long after, possibly multiple hundreds of years after, God’s natural causes would have brought them to death. America only has a limited amount of finantial resources. Which is more Christlike to continue to spend some available tax dollars feeding the poor, foreign aid and welfare or to let healthcare, that beyond resonable attempts, devoure 100% of Amercan GNP to our and the world’s ruin?
If Church leaders decide that people must be kept alive as long as artificial modern medicine can take them, let us put this finantial responsibility on the Catholic Church so the Catholic Church first and foremost faces eternal damnation for not spending every available Church donation dollar on artificially keeping people alive unreallistically hundreds of years beyond death by God’s natural causes.
Peace in Christ,
