Why do Catholics need God in their lives? My life is OK without God. I’m not a Christian. I don’t feel empty in side. In short “LIFE IS GOOD”! Who needs an impersonal god imposing rules and regulations on the way a person freely chooses to live their own life? God only crimps your style? It’s a drag.

Ok. I’ll bite.

God is my creator. He is the reason I have life in the first place. He is also the giver of all good things here on earth. I am eternally grateful for them all! Plus, because of God I have the opportunity to spend eternity with Him and be grateful for that long.

Knowing God and having a very personal relationship with Him, I have come to understand that He really does want what is best for me. He wants me to be free from sin and earthly attachments – i.e. real freedom. It’s not a drag. It’s a joy in knowing Him always and peace in doing His will.

God bless you.

Hi Nancy, what is your background? Were you reared in a Faith?

Instead of trying to convince you, I’d really like to know more of where you are coming from. The hunger for God is so strong in my soul–I have trouble understanding those who don’t have it.

Been there tried it bought the t-shirt. I found after a while that I, and all the non-religious types I knew, ended up in serious slavery in one way or another, whether it was to money/possessions, status/their job, the fleeting and unstable desires of the body for sex, food, drugs or what-have-you. These things are and should be either absent from your life or of secondary status and not dominating it. Net result when they do - much unhappiness.

My God created me and knows me better than any other person could - heck, he knows me better than I can know myself. Knowing me, he also knows what’s good for me and how to provide it. Including freedom from the various tyrannies and bondages people fall into, as I’ve mentioned above. And for that I thank him every day.

Yes, we really need to know why you have the thoughts you do. They are not mainstream. . .more people in this country believe in God than do not, after all. They aren’t new thoughts–there have disbelievers in ‘a’ god, ‘any’ god, ‘your’ god as opposed to ‘my’ god, etc. for millennia. But for the past 2000 years in Western civilization, after a profound historical event, the majority of people who heard of this event and studied the works of people who had seen those, those who had foretold, and listened to those who had not seen but still believed, came to believe themselves.

So if it didn’t happen the way the Bible and Tradition say, it was the greatest hoax in history to not only last 2000 years but still be ongoing.

If it did happen, to hear, learn, and not believe would be the greatest mistake a person could have made, and still be making today.

Excellent point, Lily.

Nancie, the main idea you seem to have regarding our God is that he ‘keeps us from living freely’.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Only by knowing, loving, and serving God will we be free from the real shackles and slavery chains that bind us to material goods and to ephemeral ‘freedoms’ which are anything but free.

If you think you can live your life without personal cost to you or anybody else, you’re (excuse the phraseology) dead wrong.

You have been bought and paid for; your life is not and never was ‘just for you’. Your very birth is a product of the selfless caring and sharing of your parents --you could have been aborted, your existence could have been curtailed from the start with contraception. Yet even your parents did not conceive you ‘alone’ out of random matter, themselves random flotsam and jetsam on a planet itself existing in chaos with no known beginning yet a definitive end. . .you are a child of God even if you cannot yet recognize it.

As a member of a family, be it child of God, child of parents, child of humanity, you will never be ‘free’ in that you can live as though you and you alone existed. The attempts to do so by those who fail to recognize their responsibilities have caused an even deeper slavery in their false conception of what ‘freedom’ means. . .

Just because you don’t think about God often doesn’t mean that God is not in your life. Just because you don’t like the rules doesn’t mean they aren’t correct.

You are obviously a seeker of contact with Christians. Why would that have happened? Try reading about the Holy Spirit. You might understand God a little better.

God bless.
Aaron

Which rules and regulations did you have in mind? I’ve found that in my life, every time I’ve gone against one of God’s “rules and regulations,” I’ve ended up in one heap of trouble and misery. God is our Father, and like earthly fathers, He gives these R & Rs to live by to protect us, sometimes spiritually, sometimes physically, and sometimes emotionally.

It seems to me that without God, life has no real meaning. Without God, I don’t know what would get me out of bed some mornings. Without God, I wouldn’t understand my profound purpose in this life.

Things do not always go well in your life. There will be times when you are incredibly happy, but there will also be times when you are engulfed in a bitter ocean of sorrow. Without God during those sad times, our life can be pretty bleak.

When a person comes to fully understand the “rules and regulations” of faith, they realize that they are not so much rules as our appropriate response to the unlimited love of God. They help us live a happy life, even when we don’t understand them.

Abiding by these rules is only a “drag” if our mind is disposed to breaking them. For a person who understands God, following His commands is a joy. I don’t say this through some idealistic philosophy, but through the experiences of my own life.

You would not be here if it wasn’t for God. God is only impersonal because you make no attempt to allow him to get personal.

You want proof of God? Hold your breath. When you turn blue in the face and take that next glorious breath, there was God.

As for rules and regs, if you live in society, there are rules and regulations you must follow if you want to remain free here on earth. If you play tennis or a sport, you have rules. If you have a job, there are rules to follow. God’s rules and regulations are for you to work your way to life after this bodily life.

God crimps your style? I’m sorry and I’ll pray for you.

I was raised in a non- religious home. From what I have read on this forum Jesus died for me but why does that make me accountable to him? I didn’t ask him to die for me.

I think you know what rules and regulations I am talking about. You can’t legislate morality. Besides morality is in the eyes of the beholder. I don’t think I am immoral because I have had sex out side of marriage with multiple partners. Sex doesn’t make me a bad person. The people who think so have dirty minds.

You didn’t ask Him to give you life, either, but He did. You are accountable before God, and there only. When you reach your final reward, He will demand an account from you.

My rule is: Love the sinner, hate the sin (because we are all sinners-incapable of being otherwise!). The Catholic Church does not tell you you’re a bad person for sinning, It does, in a nutshell, tell you what you should do to live a purer life, and ultimately, get to heaven.

And sex does not make you a bad person. (I happen to make love to my wife frequently! 😃 ) Look at the results: If you’re married, and you have sex outside of a covenental marriage (and if you said “I Do” in church with witnesses, you’ve entered into a covenental marriage), you’ve broken the covenant, you’ve broken your promise to your spouse and to God! What’s more important, really, than being honest? I won’t go into the multiple partners thing, but think of the spiritual aspect of sexual relations. Sex is meant to be a beautiful thing, some would say sacred. When you go around sleeping with multiple partners, you ruin the more spiritual meaning of the act.

To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, no explanation is possible.
-St. Thomas Aquinas

Pray for faith and humility. Until you begin to walk by faith, and until you humble yourself before the Lord your God, nothing anyone of us say will help you understand God. If you are truly sincere in asking us why we need God, then this is what you should do.

Ok Nancy, I have a question that I really feel I need to ask… It is a serious question, from the heart, and I am asking that you don’t take it in any way as against you personally… but there have been times where I have read posts similar in nature to what you are asking in the beginning of this thread… and I wonder, what causes a person who rejects Catholicism, religion in general, or God our Father, to come to and join a place specifically titled ‘Catholic Answers’? Much like those who are very anti-Catholic and come here and join, reside amongst us for periods of time, sometimes long periods of time, all the while detailing their objections to the faith. I just don’t get it, and I honestly want to understand the reasons/motivations… no harm intended at all. Can you share with us/me what brought you here to the Catholic Answers to begin with, then what caused you to join, and why you stayed if you do feel the way you seem to - rather than joining a forum not based on Catholicism and with others who might more closely share your beliefs? Is it really because you are denying a part of yourself that might want more from life and you are searching and hoping to be brought into the faith? Or something else?

No, you are not alone. There are millions people out there who think they have everything, but at the end of their lives, they realize they’re thirst for something else. Something that a Christian can only find from the True God - it is the Eternal Love and Life.

Where do you go when you die Nancie?

I’ve asked this question of other posters as well. I’ve never understood why anyone who feels this way would bother with folks who feel the way we do! When I was out of the Church, and spewing my anti-Catholic nonsense everywhere, the last place I would have wanted to be was a Catholic forum!

If you don’t need God in your life, what are you doing in this forum? You’re obviously searching for something!

The more my faith/belief in God grows, the FREER I feel. I don’t get bogged down in rules and such.

God believes in you, whether you believe in Him or not. God loves you, unconditionally.

I’m sorry, something in your post just occurred to me … the question about who needs an ‘impersonal’ God… this is probably one of the biggest misconceptions of anyone who has not truly experienced and lived the Catholic faith… there is absolutely nothing impersonal about God to us. He lives and breathes within us, throughout each and every day, and we in him. He guides us through trials and rejoices in our triumphs… he shows us the way when we are lost, loves us despite our sins, and protects us from anything that would take us from his love. I feel I know God and he me so much more intimately through Catholicism and daily prayer than I ever could have come to experience in any other (lesser) faith…

Impersonal? Nothing impersonal about Our Father. And that is truly what he is, Our Father. As any true father loves his children, that is the love we seek and find so easily in Him.

It is my hope that someday you will come to earnestly seek his love… and then it will change your life in ways you never could have imagined. Because it is only through knowing him, and being one of his children, that you can appreciate how many blessings and the depth of love he has to offer. 🙂

Bless you Nancy…
Margaret
