“to love others and to do well by them and by yourself” How do you define what is “love” and what is “good”? We have many thousands of years of monotheism which has produced for Jews and Gentiles alike the reason for our existence. We know love, for God is love. We know what is good and right because we have the prescription for such. Does that mean that we all comply? Why no, because we (including you) are all sinners; however, we believe in and practice forgiveness because the One who died on the cross for all did just that. Gratefully, I find JOY in the blessing of grace and mercy… it allows me to continue on my path toward my reward.
Sincerely, because grace happens~

There can be plenty of meaning in life without worshipping a deity. It’s quite simple really – to love others and to do well by them and by yourself. I don’t believe there’s any sort of eternal reward for this (or eternal punishment for not doing so), but then, why does there need to be such a thing as an incentive for us?
Nor does the lack of faith automatically place one in slavery to the material. All it does is make us focus on this life because it’s all we have. Yes, sometimes that does include some kind of slavish devotion to transient pleasures, but not always – and religious people are hardly free of those too.
Bottom line, the absence of God should not be an impediment to doing good; and if you think the presence of God is the main reason people do good, I’d highly encourage you to reexamine your faith very closely.
