In the previous topic we see that people are asking is it moral to hunt. Another question more pertinent to fluent society is: Is it moral to eat factory farmed foods?

IMO, yes. But is it moral for those who produce them? We rely on their honesty. Are they doing something immoral? If I find that to be true, then my support for that producer would have to end.

Factory farms are not inherently immoral. They could easily be run in an effective, humane way even if it costs a bit more. Thus I’m not going to boycott all products from factory farms. If I was persuaded that a majority were inhumane, which usually implies unhealthy as well, then I would move away from it. Anyone who is trying to eat healthy will move away from factory farm meats anyways. If factory farms are getting way with things its because people are not worried about eating healthily.

I have another question while we are on the topic of whether eating the foods commonly available and affordable is moral:

is it moral to eat soy, wheat and corn and the products derived from them which thanks to modern global agribusiness have thrown small subsistence farmers off the land, destroyed habitats if millions of animals and entire species, irretrievably altered ecological systems to the detriment of their locality and the planet, and caused big money agriculture to be as big a player in international finance, with all the corruption involved in that monolith, as the military-industrial complex?

Both are perfectly moral as a consumer. As a provider, hunting would take the moral ground over factory farms, because of the unethical way in which many animals are dealt with in this huge meat farms.

I’ve often wished I liked venison. It would be immoral for me to hunt, because I would murdering. I don’t eat the meat, but my uncle’s hunting is not murder, and is fully moral, because he eats the animals, and uses their hides, etc… No problem with that at all.

As a consumer, eating meat is fine. It’s biblical even. However, Jews, who have not come to accept the New covenant, are bound by old covenant law, and have a great number of laws concerning the preparation and consumption of meat. Gentiles may eat anything, unless it’s strangled, or is bloody.

(I often wonder about rare steaks, prime rib and steak tartar, but I hardly ever eat anything like that anymore, and if I do, I get it well done.)

Anyway, interesting topic. I’ll have to read this and see what folks have to say.

Hamburger needs to be well done because it is ground. But steaks only need cooking on the outside. YUM!
