Is it moral to vote for yourself in an election?

Yep, if you meet the requirements for that office. It’s not a moral question, if one thinks they are the best candidate for the office, why not vote for whom you think is the best candidate?

I don’t see how it could be immoral to vote for oneself. I am sure that if it is allowed, politicians vote for themselves all the time! That said, if you meet the qualifications of the office, are orthodox in your beliefs and moral values, and think you’d do a better job than the incumbent then by all means vote for yourself! Of course, write in votes often don’t get elected because you’d have to have a very large number of them writing you in in order for it to work. So therefore, I think I would honestly recommend voting for the lesser of the two evils who are already on the ballot.

2. Why would you vote for your opponent. You would be saying he is the better

Actually, when I was in grade school, there was this notion that you should vote for your opponent (for student council, or class president, or whatever) out of courtesy, and they were expected to do the same for you.

I don’t know how that got started or why or even if it was quasi-official or not.

Anyone else experience this?

Of course nowadays, most pols would say they’d do that then vote for themselves.

They usually have it televised when a presidential candidate goes to the ballot box to vote for himself.

Why would you not vote for yourself. If you don’t think you are the best candidate, then why are you running? And why in the world would you be dumb enough to trust that the other guy is going to vote for you if you vote for him? Anyone that dumb certainly does not deserve to be in office.

I don’t know if that is true or not for cardinals but it is irrelevant. The cardinals choose the pope through the guidance of God and the Holy Spirit and Gould would not allow anyone to be pope who God did not want to be pope. Sure you can quote the three pope crisis but there was still a real pope and two antipopes. Besides, I would hope most cardinals would be trustworthy enough not to vote for themselves if that is in fact the rule.

I don’t think this is a rule though. I mean, if a cardinal really believes that he is called to be pope then he should vote for himself and wouldn’t voting for one’s self be a safe way to cause a stalemate when God is not ready to select a pope?

In my opinion, It becomes a sin if you know deep within you that your opponent is better for the job at hand. However, if you know deep within your heart that you are better for the job at hand then there is nothing wrong with voting for yourself
