Is it morally permissible to have a medical procedure done in a hospital that performs abortions as long as the medical procedure has nothing to do with abortion and the medical procedure is morally permissible and the doctor performing the procedure has nothing to do with abortion? Thank you.

Probably the answer is yes.

[sarcastically, it may be difficult to find a hospital that does NOT perform abortions. Check with your parish right to life committee … they probably know whether your local hospital performs abortions or not.]

Truthfully, I was brought into this world by a doctor who also happened to be an abortionist!! My mother did nothing wrong… and yes, it is morally permissible to go to such a hospital. As long as you are not going to have an abortion, you’ve got the green light.

That’s a different story. I’m glad you survived to tell the tale. Over here in Britain I would not have the choice although admittedly it makes me afraid especially in the maternity department that the midwives/doctors etc. are involved in abortion. We should have Catholic hospitals like they do in Africa.

Thanks for the replies. I only feel bad because the procedure could be done by the same doctor in a Catholic hospital about a month later, but it will conflict with our schedule. I just pray that the surgery goes well with no complications. It is an outpatient procedure, but please keep us in your prayers.

It would be morally irresponsible to entrust ones life to the hands of someone who is in the business of killing people.

In your example if the doctor performing the procedure has NOTHING to do with abortion, you may entrust your life to him without scruple.

(“nothing to with” meaning does not support, perform, encourage, vote for, or otherwise make money off of abortion)

I would not feel comfortable having a procedure that was intended to help me in a hospital where they also allowed doctors to routinely violate the hipocratic oath and kill an unborn child.

I’m not sure this is accurate. I have a cardiologist that I see on a regular basis. His treats and monitors my heart. I’ve looked up his educational background, if he’s had any malpractice issues. What isn’t my business is how he votes. That is between him and God, and does not effect if he is a good cardiologist or not.

Perhaps put yourself in my position. My son was born almost 3 months premature. I was sent to the hospital by ambulance. He needed to be admitted to a Level 1 NICU. The closest one available, also performs abortions in its family planning clinic. While I loathe abortion, and find it an abomination…as a mother I was obligated to get my baby proper medical care. The closest Catholic hospital did not have the level 1 NICU. The NICU staff were not part of the family planning clinic.

Also there is a Catholic chaplain at the hospital who offers daily Mass.

Nonetheless, I did find it disturbing that part of the hospital was dedicated to saving little babies, while another part was dedicated to killing them.

It really doesn’t matter if he has had malpractice issues. That only means he either did not get caught killing people, or that the state does not condemn the killing of people. It would be irresponsible to trust ones life into the hands of someone who is a known killer.

If he publicly supports abortion, that is reason enough. That means he is ‘okay’ with killing people. Would it be responsible to entrust ones life in the hands of someone who is ‘okay’ with killing people.

Actions that affect other people are also between him and the people it affects. Choosing to support killing people makes one responsible to those people who are put to death.

The moral question, methinks, is similar to "Would it be morally permissible to buy, say, cardiac medication from a pharmacy that sells “the pill”.

I think if one needs medical care, and they are the best available to take care of you, the fact that abortions are provided at the hospital is immaterial. If one has a choice between hospitals that provide similar quality care, and one provides abortions and one not, it would be better, methinks, to choose the one that does not.

Hi…normally how someone votes is a private issue - not public. It really isn’t up to me how my cardiologist votes…and it isn’t my place to ask him. I am 100% confident that my cardiologist does not perform abortions.

A doctor can also get sued for malpractice without a patient ever having died. Many times they are sued unjustly. My purpose for checking his malpractice records was to see if he had been sued often, and if he had any judgments against him.

There are many things I don’t know about my cardiologist…if he’s married, if he has children, if he’s divorced and remarried. I don’t know if he’s Catholic…the only thing I know is that he is a good cardiologist.
