Is it Morally WRONG to employ live-in GAY couple?

Our house is very large with many family members & we employ several live-in maids & drivers to run the daily household chores. Recently we hired 2 muslim men as live-in maids & we don’t have any suspicion that they have special relationship other than that they are good friends as they told us.

After working several days in my house, our other live-in workers took notice of the strange behavior of these 2 men that they strongly suspect they are gay couple. I don’t want to confront them about this because I am already convinced that they are gay couple who live inside my house along with our other workers and my family.

Event though they are good workers but I feel very disturbed knowing that they must be sexually active gay couple. They share one bedroom together in the living quarter for the workers on the 3rd floor.

They are so many people looking for work so for us, it’s very easy to get their replacement but it’s hard for them to find work that can give them free room & board.

Is it morally wrong to employ live-in sexually active gay couple inside our house?
Is it better to fire them than to let them work & engage in very sinful activity inside our house?
What is best for my soul & the spiritual welfare of my family?
What is your best advice for this situation?
Thanks
There are problems with your post.
  1. Indonesia is 95 percent Muslim. Is it safe for them to be openly gay?
2). It is quite common for some cultures to have men who hold hands and share a bed but be strait. This is common in India. You should have been familiar with this.
3). You don’t know the extent of thier relationship. You could ask. The may indeed be gay.
4). Morally speaking you are not forced to employ someone in your house you are uncomfortable with.
5). Are your employees making a fair wage. Something does not sound right here…

Second sentence of the first post - “Recently we hired 2 muslim men as live-in maids”

To reiterate what the obvious, we know they’re Muslim…how, exactly?

I did read the entire thread. Nobody (except for me) has asked the OP about how to know they’re Muslim. Is there a message where it’s addressed?
Are you saying the OP is lying about it?

Honestly, what is your point?
As HD said, nearly everyone is Muslim there.

You should have responded to the OP then, and not Clare…no worries, it’s a long thread…I’m sure you will catch up

Personally, I think it would be wrong to fire them without proof that they had done something wrong. The perception of being effeminate isn’t sufficient. I think I would invest in bunk beds. A hired hand ought to have their own bed.

Even if they don’t share the room, they will find a way to do their stuff together in the bathroom, for example.
And if you catch them, then you have valid reason to fire them. Just like if you found a man and woman misbehaving in the bathroom

Agreed.

OP, I think it would be best for you to ask them about it instead of firing them based on a suspicion.

I think one should be able to hire and fire for any reason especially a sexual one when the employee is in the same house as children…

One is “able” to hire and fire for whatever reason they want. However, the OP asked if it was wrong to fire two people based on rumors and accusations that have no basis. (Or at least, none that the OP has seen fit to share on this thread) Are you suggesting that there is no immoral reason to fire a person?

And I still don’t think it is wrong if you are uncomfortable with someone on your home. One has to wonder how they were hired in the first place. I’m telling you there is something not right about this thread…

You hire two men to be handymen in your home. The two men hold hands and sleep in the same bed. There are children around.

Morally employment should be terminated and ones hiring process would need a complete overhaul so this situation did not come up AFTER employment…

This is indeed a weird situation…

I don’t see where the OP said they held hands. He said they didn’t socialize with the other workers and they spent their freetime together, which doesn’t sound out-of-the-ordinary to me if they were friends prior to being hired. It sounds like the OP didn’t have any suspicion until his other employees (the ones who don’t socialize with these two) suggested they were a gay couple without actual evidence. It sounds to me like the OPs original employees aren’t as comfortable sharing the 3rd floor as he thought. Just a thought, but, were some of these other employees put out of that room in order to make space for the new workers?

Man. I don’t think this is a fair reason to fire someone. I mean if they’re doing their jobs well. And leaving their relationship smokey enough to only be suspected. Then why get into this? I mean why go out of your way to cause this upset?

Live in peace in this. Take care of the people around you. You never know when you might need them.

Peace.

Indonesian culture is quite different than what you may be used to. How new are you to Jakarta? It is perfectly normal to see men walking together holding hands or sitting very close together almost snuggling. You may just need to recalibrate your gaydar to work according to Indonesian norms.

I feel very badly because in some countries being gay would be cause for capital punishment.

If you decide you don’t want to have these guys living in your house, tell them and allow them to leave of their own accord rather than be dismissed. You can simply say that you are reviewing the staff in the house and have decided to make some changes. You don’t need to potentially humiliate them.

If they have done their work properly, it would be wrong to ruin their chances of further employment or even get them into trouble with the authorities, simply for being gay (if they are indeed gay).

You should not put them at risk of unjust treatment or oppression. Being gay shouldn’t be a criminal offence anywhere.

Probably a good point to raise considering it’s in a different country like Indonesia. I don’t know what their laws are and if the O.P. is right and decides to fire them, than it would be a good idea not to make it public or get the law involved if the result would be capital punishment. Anyway, I don’t think posters have enough information to make an informed decision and I don’t know how the O.P. set up works either.

For example, it could be a couple hired that decide to have an affair with one another using the accommodation I provided them (or simply an unmarried couple deciding to fool around using the accommodation provided), in which I would wish to no longer employ them, however, if the punishment would be stoning, public flogging or jail etc or anything like that, I would certainly be careful to do it on the quiet so they didn’t risk anything like that.

I hope this has helped

God Bless

Thank you for reading

+1 to all of these. Is it truly worth potentially ruining lives simply because they don’t live and/or believe as you do?

Although hired help may be a cultural norm, doing so because it’s cheap labour isn’t necessarily in anyone else’s best interest. I would suggest hiring fewer people for more money and changing some lives for the better. JMHO.

This was a concern that came to mind when I read the original post.
I would urge that the OP be very careful about how he/she fires these men. Unless you have proof, you may make the situation worse. Your actions may legitimise these rumours and may make life dangerous for these men.
I am speaking from the perspective of someone who grew up in a country where even the utterance of rumour about homosexual activities can put someone’s life in danger, and not not necessarily from the authorities.
