Is it necessary for rosary beads to be used when praying the rosary?

Some people seem shocked when I say the rosary without using beads. I find it easier, at times, to just pray the rosary from a book I purchased from the Dominican Rosary Center, or to follow along when someone else is already counting for me by saying the rosary orally. I’m wondering why holding the actual beads is such a huge issue for some people. Are beads an aid to prayer because they are blessed? Or what?
