I’m trying to do a 54-day Rosary Novena for my family.
Long story short: My cousins birthday today, I got home late, I’m so tired I’m ready to cry, and my sister is blasting loud pop music right next to my room.

I can go into another room for some quiet, but only if I pray it sitting down (because otherwise my non-Catholic parents are going to walk in on me kneeling down in the middle of the family room and send me to a psychiatrist).

Does it still, y’know, count? The only other way is to wait for my sister to turn off her music (because I literally CANNOT concentrate with it on, especially being so tired and if I ask her to turn it off she’ll just turn it on louder) and that might not be until 11 o clock or later. I’ve had sleep issues lately and if I don’t get to bed soon tonight I will probably literally die of sleep deprivation within the next few days.

Is it ok to just go into the next room over and sit down to pray it?

I don’t really know the right answer, but I would say it is not wrong, because if, I am in big trouble, I sometimes pray The Rosary while walking my dog, I have the Rosary in my pocket (always, and one around my neck, under my shirts, along with a St.Benedict’s Crucifix and a Brown Scapular.) and are praying when walking. And when I still was able to attend Mass I often saw people standing or walking, and praying The Rosary while watching the stations of Christs life at the glass paintings on the church wall. And personally, I find it hard to be down on my knees, it hurts, so I sit and pray. It is not how you sit or kneel, the most important thing is THAT you pray, a intention to pray is almost as good as the prayer itself, but if you feel uncertain ask a priest.

The rosary is a private devotion and you are free to pray it sitting down, standing up,
kneeling etc. Worry not! Just pray when you can and however it works out. Our Lady does not care the position of the person or the place, just the intention.

I have a rosary tape I pray in my car when I am driving, anI Pray the rosary sitting down with EWTN, and kneeling at Church.

God bless.
Sorry your circumstances are distracting for your prayer life at this time.
Mary.

And to emphasise the point made above that the Rosary is a private devotion, and so can be said in whatever way is helpful or practical, I can add that the Religious in the monastery near where I live often say it strolling in the grounds.

The Rosary may be said from any position; kneeling, sitting, standing, lying down, walking etc. Whatever is comfortable for you.

Be assured that it is certainly not mandated that we kneel when we pray.

Some can, and some cannot. (Bad knees, other reasons).

I had a friend who used to recite it as he walked to his bus stop every morning.

I am not able to kneel anymore due to health reasons, so I will pray sitting up.

I have prayed my rosary laying down in bed too, when I haven’t felt well.

I want to add this, a thing I did just remember, when I still was able to attend Mass there where “old” people (70+) who did not kneel when all others did, they did stand up. I guess bad knees or back problem was the cause to that. And I am glad I have not sinned when praying The Rosary walking my dog, strange though, when I kneel down and pray it is hard to focus on the Prayer.

I say the Rosary each and every day – the first two decades I say with my first cup of coffee – then the 3rd and 4th at various times throughout the day – possibly when I’m walking to the store – or to public transportation – then I save the last decade when I’m in bed before I turn out the light. I take my Rosary with me every place I go – couldn’t leave the house without it – it is one of my most important possessions!

I walk my rosary. I pray as I walk through the house. I have tremendous difficulty getting up and down to kneel and then my arthritic knees are quite painful after being on them for a bit.

Yes it is fine to not kneel. Kneeling is only one posture for prayer.

Just look at the Popes walking and praying the Rosary 🙂

I do not kneel to pray at all, except in the Mass. At home, whether for personal prayer or for family rosaries, I sit on my rocking chair with my feet tucked up. Sometimes, I lay face-down on my bed if I am in distress. My kids sit on their bean-bag chairs with their legs crossed, or they will sit on my lap to rock. 🙂

My personal opinion is that whatever posture helps you to stay focused on prayer.

The Rosary, we are meditating on the mysteries, not the Hail Mary’s. The Hail Mary’s are merely a guide to keep us focused.

In all, we must understand that when we pray, we are praying in the presence of God, who dwells within.

As St Terese of Avila said, when the King comes to you, he brings his court, which is the Blessed Mother, the Angles and Saints.

Jim,

Pray it in whatever position you feel most comfortable in. Being comfortable while praying the Rosary helps a ton with the meditation for me. I wouldn’t see anything wrong with sitting or standing or driving while praying it.

God bless 🙂

Well, I surely am inspired by the OP. They know we should pray the Rosary on our knees, if we are able to. But we are not mandated to do so; although Pope Leo XIII asked that Catholic families pray the Rosary on their knees daily. Then he wanted people to pray the Prayer Against Satan and His Apostate Hosts.
Code:
Matt 16:10 Behold I send you as sheep in the midst of wolves. Be ye therefore wise as serpents and simple as doves. Christ was referring to the way that snakes scurry off and hardly are seen. He knew that the Apostles and disciples had to live on, although many were martyred, to spread the Word.

The situation the OP describes is a delicate one. Jim pointed out that we in prayer are speaking to God. Surely God will not fault the OP of this thread; but will bless them for their efforts.

Still it is certainly inspiring to read the OP's thoughts on this matter.
Peace,

If at any time you feel quite uncomfortable praying on your knees, then you should switch over to another position, one which would allow you to pray better. Except I’d try to stick it out during the Holy Mass. God bless you.

It’s not necessary to pray or have any specific posture during the rosary. Just as an observation about Saints and currently living Holy people (Padre Pio, Andre Bessette, JPII, Benedict XVI, and many others) I keep reading that while they would recite it anywhere at any time, it would be part of their daily routine to say a rosary while going for a walk.

The posture of your mind is the important part, meaning as long as you can meditate on the mysteries it counts. 👍
