Is it normal for a person to want to go to purgatory rather than heaven if they were blessed enough to even have the option?

I say this because I don’t know if I would feel comftorable in heaven right away after death with all the saints, angels, blessed mother, and martyrs. All these holy people, especially the martyrs who gave their life for Christ, and then me who by the grace of God slipped in (should I even enter purgatory). I think the embarassment would just be too much.

I just think I would feel better doing time in purgatory for some time then coming face to face with these holy people.

You certainly use the words “I feel…” a lot in discussing a subject that is an objective reality.

Honestly, this is a silly posting. Do you really think that you would be embarrassed being united with Jesus for eternity???

no i would be quite happy However, I would feel embarassed seeing the saints who acheived martyrdom.

Embarrassment is a human emotion. Once one is cleansed of all sin and united with Jesus in Heaven, we will no longer suffer from the weakness of human emotions. We will experience the fulfillment of our natural destiny, being with Christ, the saints and angels.

My dear friend in Christ;

The ONLY people who atain heaven are those who God in one of several ways has made perfect. This is the function of the sacraments, most especailly “The Last Rites.”

Anyone who attains heaven has also attained “perfection” sufficent to be there. While there may be levels of closeness to God in heaven; nevertheless all in heaven have access to Him.

Those in heaven are Soooooo delighted and tankful to be there that there is only THANKS and Praise for God and no thought about oneself.😃

There is not one Saint in heaven, except for the BVM, who was not also a sinner. Even the martyrs. They would have something to be embarrassed about too, if such embarrassment even exists in heaven. Plus, we don’t even know if the Saints are privy to knowledge of our sins–that would occur only by the permission and power of God. Only God is omniscient. We do know, however, that there is great rejoicing in heaven when a sinner repents because the Scriptures tell us that, but we don’t know to what degree God permits them to know our sins. Remember, also, that the Saints leave judgement up to God. They aren’t judging us.

In any case, I wouldn’t worry about the Saints. I’m more worried about facing Christ.

So move to Purgatory, Colorado, and get it taken care of!!!:):)🙂

Seriously, a) there is no “time” beyond death, you slip into eternity and your eternal form; and b) remember Isaiah? He was distressed at the uncleanness of his speech, yet GOD touched his lips with a coal, and he was “cleansed.” I imagine getting his lips scorched was not a pleasant expereince, but he was not made to “do time” anywhere.

Seriously, I don’t know how I could avoid doing Purgatory without a long stretch of hideous physical suffering (like our recognized Saints) and that frightens me; but I don’t want Purgatory, I want to leap into our LORD’s arms:).

Maybe I need to relocate to Purgatory, Colorado…

Purgatory is not an overnight motel visit. I would suggest you purchase of copy of

I think it’s a good question. You probably want to achieve more for God – and that’s a good desire to have. It can also be a prayer that you offer, that someday you’ll reach the purification you want here on earth.

Dear Notredame,

If you are permitted to enter heaven directly you will have the grace of Almighty God with you. I only hope we have that situation to concern ourselves with.

Most likely you will be waiting and hopefully many of us will be at least waiting with you.

Don’t worry about that as we have much to get through this life first. God Bless.

I think there’s nothing wrong with a desire to do penance… far from it…

Though one should attempt to do what one can in this life more than in the next. 🙂

I pray three Glory be’s every day without exception, in honor of God’s mercy, along with the petition that I avoid purgatory and go straight to heaven when I die.

I either read a book or heard a tape years ago that discussed that criteria required for a prayer to be answered infallibly. The criteria were that 1.) the prayer had to be offered for oour self; 2.) that we persevere in the prayer until it was answered, as well as two other conditions that I can’t recall right now. Based on that teaching (which I am pretty sure came from St. Thomas) I arrived at the conclusion that if I pray three Glory be’ every day to avoid purgatory, and persevere in that prayer until death, I will indeed go straight to heaven. I guess I’ll find out if it worked when I die 🙂

Ah, I’d love to read more about that Ultima… If you ever recall where you found it or come across it again, I pray you drop me a line.

The desire to do penance is good… but purgatory… hurts a great deal… and one wishes to see God quickly…

Both emotions are inside of me…

Good to do penance in this life… mortification…

One thing that is very good is to have masses said for oneself while still alive… there are Gregorian Masses after death… but I would prefer them while alive…

No one should strive for Purgatory. I think that the fact that the Stain of Sin is expiated there isnt the whole story. St Thomas Aquinas says that the Fires of Purgatory eminate from Hell and their pains are similar - but rather than for the torment of the damned , instead are for the purification from Stain of Sin - but make no mistake - there is great great suffering in Purgatory.

I understand the logic in what you write - but wouldnt it be better to do something about those things TODAY and thus spare yourself the suffering? That is why throughout the Scriptures - we read of the necessity to Pray to do penance - to perform acts of charity to offer suffereing and mortifications.

Keep one other thing in mind - in order to go either place - you have to first face the Lord Jesus Christ - GOD the Son himself who suffered and died for us all innocently because of each of our Sins. We must become better Catholics today. Let us not wait until our judgement to avoid the punishments for sin.

I did a quick search and found the four conditions given by St. Thomas.

From the Summa: “Hence it is that four conditions are laid down; namely, to ask–“for ourselves–things necessary for salvation–piously–perseveringly”;** when all these four concur, we always obtain what we ask for**.” newadvent.org/summa/3083.htm

I am almost positive the tape I was listening to when I got the idea to pray the three Glory Be’s to avoid purgatory was a book-on-tape by Fr. Paul O’Sullivan. It was either “How to Avoid Purgatory” or “Read me or Rue it”.

Thanks Ultima, Fr. Paul O’Sullivan, O.P., E.D.M. is a great writer, and I think a hidden saint. This is good reading. 🙂

In addition - in the 15 Promises of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Our Blessed Mother in Promise 9 promises to deliver from Purgatory souls that have been Faithful to a Daily Rosary.

I agree. I just read St Philomena the Wonder Worker by that Priest.

The means of Avoiding Purgatory according to Father Sullivan are

THE FIRST MEANS: REMOVING THE CAUSE
THE SECOND MEANS: PENANCE
THE THIRD MEANS: SUFFERING
THE FOURTH MEANS: CONFESSION, COMMUNION, HOLY MASS
THE FIFTH MEANS: ASKING GOD
A SIXTH MEANS: RESIGNATION TO DEATH
THE SEVENTH MEANS: EXTREME UNCTION INDULGENCES AND PURGATORY

I’m going to have to take an in depth look at that Summa article, I bet some excerpting and cutting and pasting could make it into a tract. At the very least it’s a great source for quotes.
