This is not a hit piece but it is a mere observation. Both are responsible for a wide degree and quality of evil, however God seems to have better reasons for doing what he does and he is more consistent regarding avoiding intrinsic evils.

Aside from that, the two individuals are rather alike.

False.
A) God is not an individual
B) We are Catholic, not Gnostic.

God is simply “being” while Satan is a mere angel who apes God’s plan.

Leaving aside what Judaism says about Lucifer, in what sense do you mean that G-d is “responsible for a wide degree and quality of evil”?

God is the Creator
Satan is one of the created. Not similar.
Code:
*"And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!”...Then the dragon became furious with the woman and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus. And he stood on the sand of the sea."* (Revelation 12:10-12,17 ESV)
God’s actions further the Kingdom, though sometimes we may not understand how. satan’s actions seek to destroy the kingdom. Opposite of each other.

Evil was created by creatures, not God. God does not create evil, although He does not stop all that we create from happening, and He does cause good things to come out of it.

Further, the devil is an angel that chose to fell - that is a mere creature who rebelled against what he knew to be good out of pride. God does not rebel against anyone (there would be no one for him to rebel against but Himself) and God was not created. God is existence itself, the devil is merely a thing that exists.

And even further, God and the devil are completely different in power. While the devil is allowed to use the will he was given at his creation like all creatures are and so is allowed do things that are contrary to God’s will, he ultimately can no more stand up to God than a fly can stand up to a supernova, and he knows this.

So no, I really don’t see any way in which they are similar really.

Evil is not a being, thing, substance, or entity. Being is either the Creator or his creature. Even Satan was once good. He is a good thing gone bad - in fact, a very good thing gone very bad. If he had not had the greatest ontological goodness of a powerful mind and will, he could never have become as morally corrupt as he is.

There is nothing in the visible universe that is intrinsically wicked. Sex, gold, alcohol - all these things are good and therefore are desirable. Sinners look only at the material element of a sin and find it good - as it is. Then, when they have abused its goodness, they turn against God because the effects of this misuse have brought them misery.

In addition to the above, Satan has been “cast down to earth,” meaning he is now confined to the material universe (space-time), while God, as Creator, is outside space-time. That is a huge dis-similarity.

When God was at “rest” before creation, He had yet to pour out His great powers of Perfect Strength (Justice) and Restraint (Mercy)…both of which are Infinite Virtues of God.

At the moment of creation (when God allowed a sea of possibilities to begin playing out) there was a created being whom God refers to as the “Great Sea Serpent” that SEEMED like God’s equal for a short time (before God expanded into His powers).

Later, as God rose upward into unapproachable fires of Perfect Justice (and downward into the realm of flesh where Jesus showed forth Perfect Humility and Mercy and Obedience…etc)…the Angels of God drove out the Devil with their own increasing powers of Truth…with one angel shouting WHO IS LIKE GOD?

They might be alike in that they are “pure spirits” but to me that is where the similarity ends.

God (all Three Persons) has always existed, exists today, and will always exist. God was not created by any other entity. He is pure Spirit, outside of time and space. He is not capable of producing evil, He is pure Goodness, Light, and Love. Pretty mind-boggling, when you think of it. The evil you see is not caused by God–He only permits it to occur.

Satan, on the other hand, is a creature, like all angels (Satan is a fallen angel.) He has considerable power only because God permits it. Satan’s power, however, is limited, and he exercises it because he wants to see all humans as miserable and hateful as he is.

Being an angel, with intellect and will far superior to that of humans, Satan, as well as all the other angels, got one shot at deciding whether they would be obedient to God or to rebel against Him. Satan and the rest of the demons have absolutely no hope of redemption. They made their choice, and they are stuck with it. They are beyond salvation. Christ did not shed His blood for them. So we humans, in this sense, are far more graced than angels, because we can repent and have the assurance of redemption provided we want it.

Eventually, when God wills it, He will permanently kick Satan’s you-know-what, and Satan knows it. He just wants to take down as many of us as possible with him before that happens, because he is permanently deluded that his power approaches that of God.

Odile…great post…but I have one issue. You state…“Christ did not shed His blood for them [angels]” I believe that is wrong. See the posting above where the Book of Revelation is quoted…and you will read there how the good angels cast out the bad through with the weapons of Truth …and the Blood of Jesus.

All God’s kingdom is mercifully clothed in the Blood of the Lamb.

I think the issue comes from the thought of “From where comes Evil?”.
While it is true that God enabled the existance of Evil, through creation of Free Will, He did not activate it, it got activated by the agents that incur evil, like Satan.

Of course they are opposing enemies, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t be similar to each other just as two democracies at war with each other can be similar.

And it’s true that while one is greater than the other, as far as everyday observed effects go the two powers produce many of the same (visceral) effects.

For instance, God killed some of Egypt’s children, while the devil as Baal killed many children too.

However the difference is that God had justification while the devil didn’t. But I don’t think that made a difference to the people who were killed and that’s what I mean when I say that there is no practical difference.

Likewise someone who is killed by God, will feel just as bad and will be spared no quarter just as if the devil killed him.

I suppose what I want to do is to balance out the stereotype of God being nice with the obvious fact that he can be and is pretty violent.

This is a very strange notion of similarity - two things are similar if others occasionally react to them the same way. It’s like saying that sunny day is like a hammer, because in the right conditions they can both cause headaches. (Migraine and being it in the head respectively). If you want to use such a definition, that’s fine, but pretty much everything is similar in this way.

God “having justification” is not just a piddly little difference that allows Him to get away with somethings. God is the ruler of the universe and the master of us, our births, and our deaths. Keeping in mind that death is not final, the comparison between God killing a person and the devil killing a person is the difference between a parent picking their child up from a birthday party early, and a psychopath kidnapping the child.

In both cases the child is no longer at the party, and if the children there are the type of people who tend to think of everything in terms of the party and, while perhaps acknowledging that there is stuff beyond the party, don’t really grasp how things are that the two events may seem similar. But they are not, at least in any meaningful way.

I will agree with you that God is not always nice as we see the term though. Good, yes; Just, yes; nice - sometimes (Aslan is not a tame lion). But again, I think it is stretching the term “similar” to say that God is similar to the Devil because the Devil’s work towards destroying all that is good sometimes makes us unhappy (though not always in the short term) and God’s work towards perfecting everything to the extent that it is willing to be perfected sometimes makes us unhappy (though never in the long term - though our reactions to God may).

G-d transcends all definitions, including the definition, “existence”

Yes…God is Perfect Virtue…(“virtus” in Latin means “power”)

Please note the EXTROVERTED and RECESSIVE nature of Virtue. God has Perfect Justice and outward Strengths (extroverted)…God also in capable of Perfect Mercy (introverted or recessive)…Thus “God made them male and female, in His own image He made them”.

Notice too, that the Virtues of Justice/Strength seems to be hierarchical…that is “over” Restraint/Mercy…(yet all virtues are part of Virtue–God is One)…This apparent hierarchy God explains to us as a Father/Son relationship.

Notice also…The Holy Spirit can be seen in this Oneness of Virtue…because there are Virtues that seem to actualize with creation…Trust, Obedience, Faith, Love, Hope…that are accessible to us. Jesus never said that someone was saved because they were good…but that they had taken on the “wedding garment” of Faith from the Holy Spirit.

I would agree with you. I would simply add that what we both see is extremely important insofar as it seems to be popularly unnoticed. Namely, we see that God may not help you when the knife is to your throat and your enemies are savoring your death, because God has a good reason. This means that God -the friend of friends and the exemplar of true goodness -does not exclude the dark or what we would call “traitorous” from his friendships, or his dealings. Far from it indeed, our mutual realization gives lie to the idea that just because someone is good, that he will make life easier or, in any measurable way, better for those he likes. The same for statesmen, for statesmen are reproached with doing a lot of dirty deeds, but in a way, no one does dirtier deeds than God and what God does is whiter than snow. It also shows, that practically anything could be good and that people should never despise one species of good, just because they are afraid of blood.

Actually I think that God must be an individual. If he is not then he is, rather, nothing; for there is no really existing substance that isn’t individual. Since God is really existing then he is individual.

This is because, no universal (like “Being”) can be actually existing in separation from our ideas -for the universal is not material and as such cannot be shared or divided up (since the spiritual has no parts). Therefore the universal cannot both be separately existing and be universal in applicability.

Therefore if it exists it must be individual and if it doesn’t exist, then all things are individuals anyways.
