Is it ok for a Catholic to listen to these musicians / bands?

Is it ok for a Catholic to listen to these musicians/bands? Is it sinful to be a “fan” of any of these? :
  1. Bob Marley (although he references Rasta-ism a lot – I find it hard to “sing along” to some lines)
  2. Jimi Hendrix
  3. Led Zeppelin
  4. The Eagles
  5. The Who
  6. The Beatles
  7. Guns N Roses
  8. KISS
  9. Pink Floyd
  10. AC DC (i really dont know about this one)
  11. Metallica
  12. Aerosmith
  13. Bon Jovi
  14. U2
Yes or No? Your thoughts?

There are no hard and fast rules to what music you can listen to on your own time. Many of the bands you list are very talented. As I have grown in my faith however, a question I often ask myself in regards to many forms of entertainment is: “Could I do that with Christ?” … for example, listen to the lyrics. Would you sing those words to Christ? There are many secular songs that can be sung to Christ and also many that should not be. Something to ponder.
 
Listen to what you want. If a song turns out to be offensive to you, don’t listen to it again. I listened to many of those groups - I might dislike their lifestyles, but I liked the music!

I don’t think the Creator of the universe really cares what groups you listen to, as long as you don’t pattern your lifestyle based on the musicians, or the words to their more questionable songs…
 
I hope not those are my favorite bands, and I have a shirt of almost all of them.

Some of those groups, for example The Beatles & The Eagles have songs with questionable lyrics & some songs that are perfectly innocent. If the song is offensive to me like “Hotel Calif.” I concentrate on the music & not the words.
If the lyrics are not influencing you to follow a bad lifestyle, there shouldn’t be any sin in enjoying the music. :whistle:
 
Of the groups listed, I am most familiar with the Beatles. In my humble opinion, a few of the very best songs ever written include Let it Be (Paul McCartney), My Sweet Lord (George Harrison), and Here Comes the Sun (George Harrison).

There is something about music and lyrics that can stir deep emotions. I believe music is one of the great gifts that enrich the soul, and the human spirit. Especially good music - like pipe organ hymns sung by large choirs and congregations in great cathedrals. Now that is magnificent. Song as prayer is so uplifting

When I was young it never occurred to me how wonderful ‘sound’ really is. The older I get the more stirring it gets, and the more appreciative I am of beautiful music.

Those who make good music are blessed, and we are truly blessed to have the technology to replicate it.
 
Sure, why not? I was just listening to Appetite for Destruction this morning (Guns n Roses). And really, I listen to mostly all of them (except for Pink Floyd and Bon Jovi).

I like all of those bands so I’m glad you’re all okay with them 🙂 I’ve avoided asking a question like this in case I got a negative answer 😉 You know, I’ve often wondered about the lyrics to songs like Sympathy for the Devil, which is a great song whichever way you look at it, but I do sometimes wonder whether I should be listening to it.

Anyway, to recap… I’ve enjoyed listening to pretty much all those bands and they haven’t affected my faith any way 🙂

With the exception of Bob Marley and Hendrix and the beatlesI like all of those bands. Though, I may detest some of the members actions, views, or lifestyles.

Why would it not be ok?

For example to sing along to a song that says “Rastafari!!” (Bob Marley), or “I’m going to hell…satan get you” (ACDC) etc…

Picture it’s a Saturday night…I just wonder if it’s ok to go to these concerts, have fun, and then the next Sunday morning to go to Mass and take Communion without going to Confession… 🤷

Well, your OP said listen. I definitely do not sing along with objectionable lyrics. 🤷

This is especially problematic for me because I am a fan of early 90s gansta rap. (don’t ask) Where almost all the lyrics are horrid. As I have gotten older I have moved away from the NWA/ Snoop (also rastafarian) and other groups. But, they were a part of my youth.
I was not Catholic then however. Now, as a stay at home homeschooling dad, I find I never have the opportunity to crank out" $%*& the Police" in my minivan…🤷

In “My Sweet Lord” they are singing about Krishna & chanting …Hare Krishna. May not be a good example of songs ok for Catholics. 😉

You’re Catholic and you are free to listen to or read anything. Regardless of your age, I advise you to follow your heart. Your heart is sacred, but your record collection can be either sacred or secular. Why limit yourself? You should find what moves you, and whatever that is it will carry you away to God.🙂

I just listened to “Highway to Hell” - AC/DC…How can this song “carry you away to God?” It calls on satan, the singer wants to be in hell with his friends, he headed for the promised land…
I must admit, the devil is slick…the song has a catchy tune & driving beat that lures you right in.
Definitely not on a religious person’s play list! :tsktsk:

If you google the song, you’ll find that it’s not really about satan and hell.
