Hi

I support Manchester United (greatest English football team) who are known add the red devils. Their club emblem is a devil with a pitchfork. Being a devout Catholic I need to know whether this is acceptable or whether it is somehow glorifying the devil.

Even though i love the team, if it is against Catholic principles I would look for another team to support as my God comes first.

Please help,

Thanks & God bless.

From what I read they used to be called the “Heathens” because of a Baptist preacher that played for the team aka Newton “Heath.” Apparently after a while they disliked being called that and a devout Catholic named sir Matt changed their name to Red Devils in conformity to the exploits of the Parachute Regiment at places like Arnhem. I guess they took the City of Manchester Coat of Arms and slapped a red devil on it.

I pitty soccer fans. Watching fake injuries and zero zero ties.🤷

But I would not let the mascot deter you. I have known Catholics who like the Duke Blue Devils, I know atheists who like the Saints.

My old university’s team is called the Blue Demons. The university is run by the Vincentians.

Beautifull style of play and financely self supplied, not to mention we have the best fans in England and this is the year we take back the premiership:)

Come on Arsenal!
Leave United join the Arsenal:)

Of course it’s okay. Manchester United players Wayne Rooney and Chicirito are also Catholic so there you go.

It is fine for Catholics to play sports but being a fan is a form of idolatry which also leads to hatred of others (opposing teams and their fans).

It also leads to sloth & gluttony (sitting before the TV munching junk food).

I used to go to a parish across from an indoor ice rink. After a severe snow storm only ~20 people but the parking lot of the rink was full for a high school (I think) hockey game.

Each christian should be able to live idolitry in an acceptable way which doesn’t lead to hatred. This must be possible in the sense of fair play.

Like that one can experience his identification with his club in a positive way with his community. Travelling through the country, meeting new people (also supporters of other clubs) makes a lot of fun and won’t harm you.

Actually there is too much hate and violence around football matches but that isn’t because the sport has supporters. Football itself has a positive message 👍

If we think further about your theory one could say that catholics should be discouraged to engage in politics since there isn’t less hatred. But it’s clear that politics has it’s good message, too.

Btw. I don’t think the premier league is as attractive as it has been some years ago. Try the Bundesliga 😛
