Is it ok for a lay person to wear a monk’s habit?

Thank you everyone for your responses. This was more of a question out of curiosity, not something I was necessarily planning on doing. I received a response from a well educated deacon that was also very helpful:

“…if you are speaking of the third orders or the associated oblates of orders, the kinds of habits that third orders or oblates would wear vary greatly depending on the religious order.

Franciscan third orders wear a habit that looks very similar to the Franciscan religious habit, it is just enough to tell the difference. Benedictine oblates, on the other hand (of which I am one) are not permitted to wear any habit other than the black scapular of Saint Benedict, so as not to confuse them with the monks or nuns themselves. Third order religious and oblates who are ordained as priests or deacons are permitted, if they wish, to wear hooded albs at Mass and at the Liturgy of the Hours, as a personal sign of their religious affiliation. However, there is no regulation which forbids those who are not Third Orders, Oblates, or religious associates from also wearing a hooded alb if they choose.

Third order discalced Carmelites do not wear a special habit, at least to my knowledge, but many of them wear sandals on their feet. After all, to be discalced means to be without shoes.

It is generally considered in extremely poor taste to wear the religious habit of an order if you are not a member of that order. If you are a third order or an Oblate or associate of a religious order, you should follow the instructions of the religious superiors who oversee your Association as to what kind of signification you should wear.”

Are you a member of a lay order?

If you are, its probably still wrong (wrong a strong word, but “strange” doesn’t seem any gentler).

I know secular Franciscans can wear a habit…when they die, to be buried in…I joke with the secular Franciscans I know, and ask if they wear a habit around the house when nobody is looking.

To each his own, I guess

I have a pair of pants or sweatpants plus a t-shirt under my habit. If I am working outside, I will wear a short habit, which is basically a hooded shirt. I will have a t-shirt on underneath. And yes I’m a monk. So there!

Gen. speaking, but then I never looked under a monk’s robe! LOL!
Unless you are part of the ER staff at a hospital that has a lot of Religious patients coming through, you really wouldn’t be expected to.

This whole thing is something I’ve never considered, but also something that I never had the need to know about either.
