I would love to be a missionary and help some of these poor people in Africa.

I am sure I wouldn’t be the first priest who questioned God’s existance; in reality there are many athiest priests.
I do not doubt there are priests who have lost their faith. But I think their lives must be very difficult, given over to hypocrisy and perpetuating what they feel is a sham or a con. These priests need our prayers, badly.

I think your desire to help others is noble. If you want to serve overseas, you might consider the organization Doctors without Borders. They have need for Registered Nurses and Administrators/Financial Controllers, both of which may fit into your educational and work background.

I’m not going to address the details, but suffice it to say that your reasons for wanting to join the priesthood would be naive in the extreme, even if you did believe in God.

I could elaborate, but let us say that priests are far more than nice guys who help people. Your desires are wonderful, as far as they go, but you either don’t know what you’re asking or, knowing how seriously Catholics take the priesthood, you have a sick idea of a practical joke.

An atheist who knowingly became a Roman Catholic priest would be living a lie in the most profound way I can imagine. You would be entering into a deeply intimate relationship with no intention of becoming intimate. It would be worse than marrying a woman for her companionship without letting her know that you have no intention of having either sex or children. Much worse.

Here’s an idea. Go find a Rosary-praying, daily Mass-attending Italian-American great grandmother. Ask her the question quoted above. After you wake up from your coma – the coma you’ll be in after she smacks you upside the head, possibly with her walker – this “obsession” probably will have left your brain.
:rotfl:
I would love to see that 😃

If the question was sincere, it would seem clear that an unequivocal answer has been given.

If the fellow has any more questions, he might consider asking an actual priest. He would want to stay away from those Italian grandmas…especially if it is his own. (Although she would say lots of rosaries over his cold, still body while waiting for the police to get there. )

I’m Italian, but I’m not a grandma yet (whew)! Will I do until we can find one to take my place? I’m really good at saying rosaries!🙂

mattjtayl, an atheist cannot be a priest. The primary role of the priest is to administer the sacraments. How can you administer the Sacraments of Christ when you do not believe in Him?

A priest is more than a celibate social worker. A man who has no faith cannot nurture the faith of others.

I agree with flopfoot. You can try if you want. All I can say is that, seminary is not easy at all, and it’s long, at least 8 years. On top of that, you have to study and pray to God whom you don’t believe in. of course, He has done great things for me and I believe He will do to you also, if you let Him. I suggest that you discern carefully and explore all the possibilities.

I don’t know what God’s plan is for you, well, I don’t even know what is His for me. But he has great plan for every single one of us.

Btw, I think the question should be “Is it ok for an atheist to be a priest?” 🙂

He would have to lie in order to be ordained, though. If he suceeded, it would be a sacrilege. Even if he is in fact a well-meaning and giving person, we can’t advocate that he make the least effort in that direction.

There are organizations that will help moral-minded and giving people of all persuasions, including atheists, to give their lives to the poor. That is the direction he should explore.

We ought to pray that all people, especially people with such giving hearts, be given the gift of faith, as well…just as those Italian grandmas pray that they do. Those who labor to do well for their fellow human beings without the direct benefit of knowing where the strength and grace that supports them come from, these people have difficulties in this life that we would have them spared.

In other words: would that all who serve God have the grace of knowing God.

I have been seriously thinking about joining the priesthood lately, there is just one problem I don’t believe in god. Is it wrong for a priest to be an athiest?

I enjoy helping people, I enjoy using religon to make them forget about their problems and ease the reality of death. I see religion as a way to teach people morals and kindness. I really enjoy being nice to people. Everyone has a hobby, my hobby is college, I have a bachelors in computer science, an associate in nursing, a certificate in accounting, and I am currently in graduate school to be a teacher, and still I don’t know what I want to do with my life. I thought about law school, however the more I have been thinking about it for some odd reason I am obssesed with the idea of being a priest.

Is it wrong for a priest to be an atheist - there are so many reasons why the answer to that question is YES!!

Faith in Jesus Christ is not “religion” - it is far far more. For a start, it is not something anyone can control; for no one can control God. And that is Who Jesus Christ is. Not some glove-puppet one can manipulate. One could sooner control a hurricane. The God we adore is “great and terrible”, & no pussy-cat whose tail we can pull. God is terribly Good - He is is also indescribably dangerous.

I really enjoy being nice to people.

Which is admirable

“Safety in numbers” is useless before God, Whom nothing can escape. A sin is a sin, even when it is popular. We can deceive others, we can deceive ourselves - but God cannot be deceived. He to Whom the depths of our hearts are known, cannot be taken in like a mere man.

Those without faith, cannot pass it on to others; nor can they witness to it. I can’t tell you anything about the delights of physics, because I have no talent at at all for the sciences - only someone who knows & loves the subject is capable of appreciating it properly, because only that sort of person knows it from inside. That is the person who is qualified to talk about physics - but someone with no knowledge of it, no “feel” for it, no insight into it or understanding of it, is not the person to ask about it.

To have faith in Christ, is to be a learner about Christ. Mathetes, discipulus, means exactly that. The Christian faith is not mere “head-knowledge”, like a proposition in logic - it is a witness to a life-changing Reality. It is an education, friendship, philosophy, exploration, & very much more - but one thing it is not & cannot be, is an academic “subject”. Knowledge by itself never made a priest, and it never will. God’s grace, and that alone, can & does do that.

Neither is it social service - it includes that, but that is far from being the main thing about it. Helping people, is admirable, certainly - but it is not the main thing priests do, nor is it something they alone do. One does not need ordination to be helpful to people; all Christians, priests or not, are meant to be helpful. But - only priests can preside at Mass. And not only do they preside, by leading the worship; it is they who consecrate the Gifts which are offered to God in sacrifice. And it is priests who have the God-given grace & power to release from the guilt of sin. This is so great a thing, that to do so requires infinite power. An atheist priest would be safer in the path of an atomic bomb, than doing this. “God cannot be mocked”, as St.Paul points out - and to “go through the motions” of saying & doing the works & sayings of Christ in what is His Church & not ours, is mockery of God. It is* not* a good idea.

To be a priest, is not a private thing only - it is a public office in the Church, something done by the individual, certainly; but it does not stop with the individual; it goes beyond the individual. “What I think” is not enough, it’s not the whole story; one also to take into account the local church whom one serves as a priest: there is far more to the priesthood than “my personal spiritual way”. Besides, the priesthood is a very demanding life - to try “going it alone”, by living it without faith, is asking for trouble.

No number of degrees - useful as they in principle are - can replace the grace of faith in Christ. Without faith a priest would be living a sham. Every Mass he offered would be a falsehood & a deceit, because he would be acting “in persona Christi” while not having any faith in Christ. What have Catholics done to atheists, to deserve priests whose every word on religious matters is a fraud which bears no relation to their real beliefs 😦 ? Be an atheist by all means, if that is where your conscience directs you to go - but don’t commit perjury (which is what you would be doing, day after day) by living a life which requires a faith which is not honestly believed. You would be lying to yourself - what is the good in that ?

For priests to become atheists - & as you say, it happens - is appalling; but at least they had faith when they became priests. It sounds as though you’re describing a course of action which sees no need for faith even at that stage. ##

He would be committing perjury - priests swear oaths of obedience to their bishops when they are ordained.

And there would be the Profession of Faith - ordinands have to assent to that. The whole thing would be utterly dishonest. What marriage could survive if it started with a series of lies ? Same here. This would be no way to be a person of integrity 😦 ##

If you are an atheist with a desire to serve others then do so in vocation where you can exercise that desire (scoial work, medicene, law, teaching). Do not become a Priest. The Episcopal CHurch has had too many of these folks and it has not done the church well.

You have possibly been given a gift of service. If you are an athiest you have not been given the call to the Priesthood. Doubt is different than atheism. I suggest you talk to a Priest or spiritual director.

I do not want to hijack the thread but I hear I quite different question. “Am I being called to the priesthood, even tough I think I am an atheist?”😛

The answer is “The doorbell is ringing”! God is calling you to serve him.👍

Some of us did not want at one point in our lives to accept the fact that there is something bigger then us. That is God being true, and that God is love. Right now you are deciding to choose love, next you might become aware that love comes from God. I struggled with that in my life, I wanted to do good, I deeply respected the church and the religious orders, but I considered myself an agnostic. Now I understand things better.

I do not know if it is through priesthood or lay missionary work. But you heard the call, now is up to you to study, meditate, and learn how to pray.🙂

First off the question has not been asked, so I will are you catholic?

That would be the first requirement. As for being an athiest being a priest I fear it is more common than many want to think.

So for me yes it would be ok for a priest to be an athiest, they can’t be any worse than the priests I have met. I would actually welcome a debate between an athiest priest and a believing priest I would then get both sides of the situation and then maybe the truth.

I say go for it, you may be lucky enough to have an open minded vocation director, but the worst they could do is tell you they don’t want you.

good luck searching.

Sounds like a cry for spiritual help to me.

Why not become a Unitarian Minister?
Sounds like a reasonable compromise to me. Nothing to stop you being celibate and Unitarian.

The problem is even if by some miracle or serious oversight you made it INTO a Catholic seminary, you almost certainly wouldn’t make it out the other end, and would have wasted plenty of time and money in the meantime.

Plenty of ways to skin your desired cats without taking on the extras of the Catholic priesthood. Choose an alternative that better suits, and in the meantime do further study into the Catholic faith to find out what we actually do believe and what we require our priests to believe (and to do!) as well.

We’re getting off-thread, I believe.

Back on topic: No.

Not ok for a priest to be an atheist.

First, what is a priest? He’s someone who offers sacrifice to God. His hands are blessed and anointed and he is given a commission unlike any other.

So, if someone didn’t believe in God, and since the “job” requires total dedication to God, then how could anyone reconcile the priesthood with atheism?

Second, a priest is called upon to witness to God. How could a non-believer do that?

Third, a priest may be assigned to teach about, to explain, God to lay people … students, for example. The explanations may take any number of directions depending on the education and psychological makeup of the listeners. Some may be very emotional; others may be very logical. If a person has no “feeling” for God (and Mary and the saints and the Church), then how could that person provide any kind of help to the learners who seek him out?

There are millions of ways to “help people” without becoming a priest. Lifeguard. Librarian. Lawyer.

If you are interested in learning more … start reading Thomas Aquinas.

I happened to have lunch with a younger priest (just out of the seminary) today and happened to bring up this subject. (I have to be careful; he prefers to talk about non-religious issues when we are out) He had two people he met during his education who, while not necessarily atheists, where not their for the right reasons. They were both cradle Catholics who saw the priest as the star. They wanted to get the attention, missing the point of the mass. One was even convinced he could eventually marry as a Priest. Neither lasted long.
