At our parish, children approximately 4-12 years old are dismissed before the first reading and return after the Prayers of the Faithful. As a children’s liturgist, I have been reading the Gospel to them. Can lay people read the Gospel at Children’s Liturgy? If not, can you give me the source stating the rule. Thank you.

Sue,

The answer is yes, you may read the Gospel. There’s no official documentation permitting this since there’s no official documentation on a children’s “Liturgy of the Word.” in effect, this is a para-liturgy that is “presided” over by the catechist. Since it’s not at Mass, the catechist may read the gospel.
