Hello all,

I have recently found the truth in our lord christ and i am in the process of going through RCIA. I am aware that since i am not a catholic yet, i cannot take communion, but i was curious about a couple things. I was given a rosary blessed by the church priest as a gift, but i wasnt sure if it was ok to pray the rosary or if that was something i couldnt do till i was catholic. My other questions are:
  1. Can i do the “in the name of the father, son and the holy spirit” motion on my body?
  2. Can i goto confession…(probably not?)
If there is anything else that i cannot do till i am a catholic besides communion please list it please. Also if you could give a small explanation why, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

God Bless you all!

Of course you can pray the Rosary any time, quite a lot of non-Catholics who love Mary as we do, do pray it. And you can make the Sign of the Cross (that’s the ‘in the name of the Father’ prayer - the gesture you make with your hand is actually tracing a cross onto your body). The cross is a Christian symbol not just a Catholic one.

You can go into the confessional, talk to the priest about your sins, and get advice, but the priest can’t give you absolution (forgive your sins) yet. Apart from being baptised, you will need a bit of instruction about the sacrament of Confession, which you will get during RCIA, before receiving the Sacrament of Confession.

If you go to talk to the priest in the confessional, do tell him straight away that you’re not Catholic. And make sure there aren’t people in line behind you who will miss out on confession or anything.

My uncle who was Baptist had terminal cancer and he died praying the rosary! What a beautiful prayer!!!

thanks a lot for clearing things up for me. 🙂

God Bless
I’m waiting for the local church to contact me about when the RCIA classes start.

This board has been of incalculable help and encouragement. 🙂

You will both be in my prayers for your journey home to the Catholic Church. Yes, by all means it is OK to pray the rosary. Also learn about and pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. , and make the Sign of the Cross with pride.

Of course you can pray the Rosary. Mother Mary will be quite happy to help you all she can, confirmed Catholic or not. Make it a daily habit and see how fast your spiritual life improves.

The sign of the cross (SOTC) is for ALL Christians. Some non-Catholics may choose not to use it, but you certainly can. Don’t rush it.

"In the name of The Father (touch forehead)…and The Son (touch breastbone)…and The Holy (touch left sholder)… Spirit (touch right sholder).

As part of my RCIA program, we were expected to do a confession before confirmation. In February 2007, I made a one hour appointment with a Priest, explaining to him that I was RCIA. I was given the absolution, as if I was already a confirmed Catholic.

As for any of the Catholic Sacrementals and other devotions, go for it. Especially recommended would be Eucherist Adoration, if you live near a Church which has it. You can attend Mass as long as you do not partake of communion.

And these forums will give you plenty of other ideas on what you can do.

Now, you CANNOT, before confirmation, become a Priest or Deacon. :tsktsk:

It’s called the Sign of the Cross or blessing yourself.

You cannot receive Holy Communion, but you can make the sign of the cross at any time. You can attend Mass (without receiving Holy Communion), and pray the Rosary. Talk to your priest about confession. If you are already baptized, you should make a confession before your confirmation. It will (I think) be late in Lent, after you have attended Mass and undergone one or more scrutinies (NOT an intense process ;)).
