Hello-

I was wondering if as Catholics we can believe that Jesus can heal us like some Protestant groups do? What I am referring to is,immediate healing with the lay of hands or prayer group? I have an almost 3 year old who is developing slowly with speech. He passed an evaluation for Autism and Hearing. The next step is speech therapy. He is only speaking 2-3 word sentences. I am afraid they are going to find something wrong with my little boy. Is it wrong to pray and asks other to let my little one be healed? (Or have fixed what ever is wrong)

Very Anxious Mother,
Jill :crying::crying:

Yes, it is okay to pray for healing!

Two things: first, offer a prayer to Our Lord through St. Andre Bessett, new saint as of last Fall. You can read up on him (feastday is January 6); he was a healer.

Second: ask your pastor to give the child the Sacrament of the Sick. He only needs to be baptised first to receive this healing Sacrament of the Church.

We will pray for you and your child! G-d bless you!

Praying for healing never hurts! I hosestly don’t know what Catholic practice is (i am still learning!), but they don’t necessarily work in protestant circles! My sister ( ex penicostal mow catholic) has many stories where the claim of healing was made… but never happened.

Now for my encouragement: all my kids have had speech delays… except my youngest, who is too little to have a problem yet! I prayed for their healing… and although I never got an instant miracle, little miracles did happen! SLPs made good progress… kids learn… things happen that you dont expect. I assure you, miracles will happen… just npt the ones you wanted 🙂

I sincerely wish you the best, and I’ll pray too

Ask Saint Dymphna to pray for you and to petition God for healing.

*Lord, our God, you graciously chose Saint Dymphna as patroness of those afflicted with mental and nervous disorders. She is thus an inspiration and a symbol of charity to the thousands who ask her intercession. Please grant, Lord, through the prayers of this pure youthful martyr, relief and consolation to all suffering such trials, and especially those for whom we pray. (Here mention those for whom you wish to pray). We beg you, Lord, to hear the prayers of Saint Dymphna on our behalf. Grant all those for whom we pray patience in their sufferings and resignation to your divine will. Please fill them with hope, and grant them the relief and cure they so much desire. We ask this through Christ our Lord who suffered agony in the garden. Amen. *

You could post a prayer request on the prayer forum.

I have found this to be of amazing benefit.

You could have a Mass said for your child’s “healing”, but I think that sometimes we, as parents, get too uptight about “normalcy” in our kids. Also sometimes God has other plans for our children as well. There is no harm in requesting an anointing, but bear in mind that the priest may get the sense that a “healing” is not required.

It is also possible, if your church has a charismatic group, to have them lay hands on your child. This should never be confused with an anointing, though. It is much like the prayer request thread, or asking saints to intercede for us.

I personally have been requesting quite a bit of prayers from St. Raphael lately.

I’ll pray for strength for you and guidance as to what is the right path, but most of all for peace in knowing that God is with you in your journey and that you need not be afraid.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Ask St Ubaldo Baldassini to intercede for healing for your child, Ubaldo Baldassini is the patron of those who have Autism Spectrum Disorders. I have an ASD, Aspergers Syndrome. Autism is very complex, and evaluations don’t always give the right answer. He could have delayed speech for various reasons. Second opinions can be good ideas.

Charismatic prayer with the laying on of hands, intercessory prayer from others, including the saints; are all acceptable. The protestants certainly don’t have the corner on healing, Jesus encouraged us to pray for our sick brothers and sisters, and even instituted a sacrament, Anointing of the Sick. Certainly pray for him, and ask others to join in your petition. Pray for yourself, and ask for prayers for yourself to. You will need them to deal with the fear and anxiety you feel due to the uncertainty of your son’s condition.

If healing does not occur, then you will be given the necessary graces to cope with a possible disability. Also, the healing may take place through the gifts of those treating your son. God works through the doctors and therapists. Will add you to my prayers.

Yes! And don’t belittle these graces. They are huge. It’s a win-win situation. *Always *ask for prayer.

Hi Jillian. I won’t offer false hope, but boy this is a common problem. Some kids are just late talkers. Yet they do just fine later in life, you’d never know they almost gave their parents heart attacks back in the day. My kids (twin girls, 5 weeks premature) were okay on speech, but delayed in other areas like crawling and needed over a year of PT to catch up. Why can’t they all be “normal” right??

I lifted you and your little one up in prayer, may Jesus Christ be present in your household and especially with your child. May he hear our prayers and improve the verbal faculties of your child, and ease your anxieties. God bless you!!

Absolutely pray for healing “in accordance with God’s Will.” Never underestimate the power of God. Scriptures show Jesus healing all who asked. He was constantly healing somebody, had just healed somebody, or was on the way to heal somebody.

Hi-My heart goes out to you. Like Clay Pots, I also have mild aspergers. I am also a divorced, mother of three whose son has autism. He isn’t doing as well as me which breaks my heart yet I put my trust in God to hopefully get him where he needs to go to hopefully succeed in life. When I was a small child, in the late '60s to early ‘70s, my parents was told that I was mentally retarded (oh how I hate that word!), and to put me in an institution, there’s no hope for me. My uncle who was in the air force at that time advised my parents not to. My mom really anguished for me and prayed constantly. I eventually made it-and went into the air force with 5 waivers! I later learned recently that I have aspergers for all these years growing up, no one could figure out what was wrong with me, I somehow outgrew it-perhaps from the power of my parents’ prayers. I really hope and pray that your precious child will receive healing-prayers from both catholics and protestant family and friends would be awesome-I see nothing wrong with prayers from all-I know it’s tough having a child with special needs. Believe me, it feels as if all your hopes and dreams are shattered for your child. Early intervention and lots of prayers helps. Just for your information about me-I didn’t talk until I was 3 and a half and used to spin in circles and freak out with any hugs-yet somehow-don’t know why-I came around. My son, on the other hand didn’t freak out with hugs yet was more delayed developmentally than me, so there are different degrees of autism-oh-one last thing-your child needs to believe that he can do it-must be motivated and know he is loved, no matter what. I remember as a child, my mom used to tell me that I can be a nurse-I can do anything if I put my mind to it-I really believed that. No-I am not a nurse-lol! Oh well-still in the reserves (air force) and work civil service-for some reason, nursing isn’t my calling-the reason I am sharing all this is to inspire you (hopefully) to not lose hope for your precious child-I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers-really am pulling for him and want to see him succeed and be happy. Oh-one last thing-try to keep a sense of humor-it will help you get over the rough spots in life. God loves you-and may He keep you and your child close to His bosom-let us know how he is doing-Hugs-:hug3::crossrc:

The number of the children with developmental disorders increased to 25% (from less than 1% in the 1950’s) in the recent years.

Unfortunately our culture with the requirement of the success and popularity even in the preschool, increases the problem: kids who develop slower, cannot cope, feel inadequate, and the low self esteem causes every kinds of other problems.

What they need at home is security and love. We do not know, what is God’s plan with them, but we know that God loves them.

About half of them grew it up.

The speech therapy is usually good, medications seem o have long term negative effect.

Pray for your child, and pray for yourself and your family members, that you be able to give the loving secure environment.

(I have a son and a young relative with such problem, and study it since 40 years)

Pray to our Almighty Father, and purposefully dedicate every sign of the cross you make to the healing of your dear little boy. When you make the sign at Mass, before and after meals, or when praying, just say “Lord, I offer this blessing for my son”. He knows all things. Pray fervently and offer every last Holy Communion for your son. Offer every Confession you make for the healing of your son. The sacramental grace of Confession will flood into the world through you, and the door that is our Lord Jesus Christ will open, pouring forth glorious light on him.

Ask St. Thomas Aquinas to pray for him, that your dear child’s lips will be opened, as God so miraculously opened St. Thomas’ lips to preach the Gospel. Ask the holy prophet and patriarch Moses to pray to God for him, because Moses himself overcame unclean lips and impeded speech by fervent prayer. If you can, teach your child to make the sign of the cross by repeated action, and if he can only say 2-3 word sentences, put it into his head to say “Lord Jesus help” or “I love you Jesus”, or something of that manner. Getting his whole being focused on God will endear our blessed Saviour more and more to him, and the light of the Almighty cannot fail to shine on him.

Healing miracles seem very dubious these days. I trust that God gave St. Peter the power to heal the crippled man outside the Temple, but I don’t see much of that today. Real, true healing in the name of Jesus Christ only comes from a soul who has true, right, conviction-filled faith. Either it’s rare, or we’re not hearing many reports of true Christian healing. All we can do is pray; that’s all that’s left, at least at first. 🙂

If you or another person will say “In the Name of Jesus Christ, I bind you, spirit of darkness, and send you to the foot of the Holy Cross to be judged by our Lord”, it will aid him. Oppression by Hell is not to be discounted in anything. If you are to demand a change in the created world, you must do it in His Holy Name, with childlike faith and without stain of pride. It’s very hard!
