The woman I’m thinking of possibly asking out had a child 10 years ago but never married the father because she simply wasn’t in love with him. Would we be committing adultry if we dated?

Only if you’re married. 🙂

Ha. I’m not and never have been. I’m just trying to be 100% sure Im not sinning. Shes also 7 years older than I am. Does the Church have a position on how much older someone has to be before you can’t date them?

Generally society frowns upon younger teens (ie. 13) dating older people (ie. 17 or 18)…statutory rape allegations and all that…however, beyond that, there are no rules. Assuming you are both over 18 (or is is 17?), there should be no issues.

Why would it be a sin?
Are you a virgin yourself? Dont answer that… but just consider, many people fall into sin while they are young. Some get pregnant, others dont, some have abortions, some men are fathers of dead children and they dont know it… Anyone who has had sex could have had a kid today.
There are so many sins and so many sinners.
You have your own sins in your own past. This woman has her own sins in her past too.
These sins - that have been washed away in the Blood of Christ - don’t mean we dont derserve a second chance.
If no one would date a sinner, no one would date at all.
Besides. I reckon you are both in good standing with the Lord now.

From the Church’s standpoint there is nothing that would keep you from dateing and/or marrying this woman.

We are long past the days of Hester Prynn (sp?–I never finished reading that wretched book!)

Playing…Catholic Advocate here…👍

Presuming she was Catholic, one would hope that she confessed the sin of that relationship to clear HER way to be in good standing with the church.

But as far as I know–there is no sin in dating.

The sin comes when you decide to engage in pre-marital/extra-marital relations.

But no–the Catholic Church does not force women to don the scarlet A as a sign of their transgression of single motherhood.

Perhaps where you were coming from was wondering if the Church considered her married to the father of the child? No. Fornication doesn’t confect a sacrament.

If your question was sort of a wondering if the sin made her forever incapable of marriage, try this one for size. If you’ve ever used porn or masturbated (even as a teenager) you are guilty of the same sin she is, right?

Isn’t it good to have a faith in which we can be forgiven for doing wrong!?!! 😉

No it’s not adultery , no rules on age other than the prudential ones like not dating a minor child or something.
What you also want to do use prudential judgement on is the child. It is not good for a child to make attachments to the people that a parent is dating and then have those attachments broken when the relationship doesn’t work out. Keep the child out of the dating relationship until you are certain the relationship is headed toward marriage.

While I have heard other religions consider partaking in the marital embrace as a valid marriage - I have never heard the Catholic church taking that position.

Keep it chaste and imho there would be no sin.

Hi, the church had no problem with you dating this woman - but looking at all you´ve wrote, it seems that you MAY have a problem with dating her, perhaps a small bit of prejudice? Think of it like this - at least she did not abort the child, she accepted responsibiliy for actions and brought the child into thw world. I wish you happiness dating her 🙂

It isn’t a sin. If her views on premarital sex, on the Church, and on other things like that aren’t in line with Church teeaching, you probably shouldn’t do more than just go on a date. It really helps to be in a similar place spiritually as the person you are dating.
