Here in our local parish, raffle draws were done during mass before the final blessing. It is for the purpose of construction of the parish priest quarters/office. Is it ok? What can I do about it?

OK, Ill be the first to bite. No, it is not ok to do this within the Mass itself. I dont think it invalidated the Mass but I would have to say that this was in very poor taste. I dont see anything wrong with selling the raffle tickets outside after mass, but in the Church while the Mass is not yet officially over? I dont think the rubricks of the Mass allows this. This is a serious abuse. Talk to your pastor if no luck, contact the Bishop. The mass is Prayer, not a lottery.

hello!

As in literally during mass, after the communion and before the final blessing. I’ve talked to the parish priest and he simply said “it is for the church”. I don’t know if the diocesan bishop knows about this but I guess I have to try because the raffle itself has been going on for more than a year now. 🙂

Most parishes have announcements before the final blessing. Isn’t this simply an announcement of who won?

No that is not the best time for this.

Announcments do not belong before the final blessing either.

And people shouldn’t leave right after communion! To bad we don’t live in a perfect world. Anyway, since being confirmed in 2001 I have attended 4 different parishes due to moving. All of them made their announcements before the final blessing. I guess if they are going to do announcements, whether it’s right or wrong, why not announce the winner of the church raffle? Then again, if we lived in a perfect world, I’d be the winner anyway.
