When I pray to our Blessed Mother or St. Sebastian, if there are no Holy Images nearby, I often mentally visualize them. Sometimes I even see them quite similar to some people I know. 😃 Is this acceptable?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this. You should talk to your confessor about your scrupulosity.

Well sure, sounds just fine to me, but I’m no priest… šŸ˜‰
Why do you think it may not be acceptable?

No.

We may not worship saints or even the virgin mary!!!

Only jesus may be worshipped.

Go in peace.

John 3:16

Well, who said I’m worshiping them? I’m venerating them.

Well, I heard about some teachers holding that one should never ā€œimagineā€ God while praying, but ā€œstandā€ before God, plain and simply. I wondered, if it relates to the Saints as well.

We have a respectful disagreement.
I would refer you to the Catholic Catcheism, The Ten Commandments, and Jesus himself!
You are to only worship God, and God alone.

Peace be with you.

Nah I think you’re thinking and worrying too much here, it’s perfectly normal and even a good help while praying that your mind comes up with an image of the Saint you’re praying to šŸ‘

Which parts of the CCC are you referring to? While you are certainly correct that we may worship no one like we do God and Jesus, I believe what the OP is referring to can be found in CCC 956, which is a lesser veneration that does not imply that the Saints are godly.

Re: imagining saints –

Some people who are very advanced in the spiritual life don’t visualize stuff or use devotional images (except at Mass), just like they tend to stick to mental prayer (except at Mass, or while praying the Office, Rosary, etc.). However, most of us aren’t that advanced, and don’t find visuals or words to be unnecessary or a hindrance. Just like it’s stupid to try to teach kids to read whole words before they know letters and can sound out syllables, and just like it’s stupid to try to teach kids to run before they can crawl, we shouldn’t jettison imagination when we’re still learning to get closer to God.

On the other hand, St. Ignatius of Loyola and many other saints particularly recommend using your imagination to ā€œget intoā€ Scripture, prayers, etc. St. Ignatius of Loyola’s Spiritual Exercises specifically instruct people to use their imagination of scenes using all five senses to get closer to Jesus. Anything that helps you think of Jesus and the saints as real people whom you care about, is usually going to be helpful.

Re: pray to saints –

If you can talk to a living Christian here on earth, you can talk to a living Christian in heaven. They are our brothers and sisters who are parts of Christ’s Body and filled with His Life, not strangers dwelling outside Christ’s Body. There isn’t any other way they can hear us except by Christ’s joyful permission. The Book of Revelation goes into great detail, showing that the saints and angels hear our prayers and present them to God, thus joining their prayers to ours.

And you may remember that we talk to the saints at Mass every Sunday. Not only does the priest ask for the saints’ help during the Eucharistic Prayers, but we all ask for their help during one of the versions of the Penitential Rite:

ā€œAnd I ask blessed Mary, ever-virgin,
And all the angels and saints,
To pray for me to the Lord our God.ā€

Hope this helps!

I thought veneration meant the same thing as worship, My apologies.

St Theresa of Avila used to use mental images and her.imagination in prayer.

So did St Ignatius of Loyola.

Meditating on Jesus Passion means using mental images sometimes.

Jesus made images with words in His parables.

An image whether 2d, 3d or in the imagination, can be used for prayer šŸ™‚
