Is it ok to like The Bridges of Madison County?

I realize if I’m gonna become a Catholic some day I better start recognizing and despising sin. And this movie does depict an extra-marital affair. But I can’t help feeling in awe at this beautiful movie. Is there anything wrong with this?

Movies are fiction for the most part.
Do you believe that simply by watching a movie portrayal of something you have also incurred that sin?
Or suddenly you are condoning it? Why?
If that were the case we could never watch a war film. We’d all be murderers by that logic.
Makes no sense.

Didn’t say that. Just waiting for others to weigh in.
Popcorn usually means just watching the thread to see what people will say.

It’s a popular movie that glorifies (not quite the word I’m looking for but it’s late) adultery. You need to make up your own mind. Have seen it, cinematically it is well done, but IMO it is like Billy Joel’s song, “Only the Good Die Young.” It smears Catholic moral teaching in regards to raising teens. But I know lot’s of Catholics who like it because it has a good beat. Go Figure.
Fred Rogers of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood make a very prescient statement once. He said, “children view a television like they view a refrigerator; something their parents allow.” I guess it is your decision how much evil you are willing to accommodate in your life.
My two cents.

Personally, I find that movie so maudlin! LOL It’s fine to appreciate the script, the acting, the cinematography, while still disapproving of adultery. I love Dr. Zhivago. Also contains adultery! But it is beautifully filmed.

Dr Zhivago is an absolutely wonderful movie. It was filmed in Spain! (I’m Spanish)

I realize it’s a maudlin film (bridges I mean) and people would think I’m an effeminate guy for loving it, but Ecclesiastes said there’s a time for everything under the sun, there’s room for maudlin beauty in my heart as well.

It’s maudlin to me. If others like it, who am I to complain? Some people detest the classic films I love. Sit back and enjoy! It’s just a film, not representative of your morality, and you are not giving adultery your stamp of approval. Neither am I when I watch Zhivago. I did not know it was filmed in Spain! I love Spain! When I lived in Europe, I visited Spain about 15-20 times! I think I’ve been down every road in Spain except those in Galicia. I have such fond memories of entering Spain from Perpignan, France, and then spending the night at the Hotel Figueras Parc. It’s not luxury, but it was Spain (one of my favorite countries) and palm trees and the best fish dinner I’ve ever had! The next morning, I made my way to Valencia or up to Zaragoza.

It’s a movie. I saw a little bit of it once, near the end. I would have a hard time watching it again, not because of the morality of the situation, but because it was just incredibly sad. I have enough incredibly sad past situations in my life already without having to go to the movies to have my emotions jerked around even more.

You are the first bear I’ve ever heard of who’s been jerked around! 😀

Oh, bears get jerked around from time to time on “Gentle Ben” and at the circus. But sooner or later, we get mad and do something about it.

Don’t poke the bears!

Don’t poke the bears!
I try to steer clear of them as a general rule. They would come down out of the woods into my grandmother’s back garden. That was scary!

Sad movies don’t bother me unless they are true or based on truth. I can’t watch “The Elephant Man” again. That final scene where he looks at the painting, then lies down to sleep, knowing he’ll die. It’s too much! I went through an entire box of tissues watching that movie, and I was saying, “Bless you! Bless you!” when people came to have tea with him and talk to him without seeming to notice his extreme deformity. I SO much wanted him to be happy!

Bears aren’t that scary, at least black bears aren’t, but it’s better for people to stay away from them. Safer for both person and bear.
And even more important to keep your dog away from them.

That’s great to hear!! I love Spain too, it just has an amazing cultural history and heritage I’m so proud of it

I’m so proud of it
With good reason! The Spanish were the nicest people I met in all of Europe, and their cuisine was beyond delicious! I would love to go back again, and I will someday.

I loved my visits to Espana and would love another visit there some day.

Viva Cristo Rey y Que Viva Espana!

I could say the same thing about the US. I love Chicago and New Orleans and I want to go to San Fran some day (I was there when I was 6 months old but that doesn’t count 😂)

Americans are really nice in my experience
