Is it ok to listen to and buy music from artists who have sexual or otherwise explicit lyrics in some songs?

Because I’m thinking if they support casual sex, they probably support abortion…

we are told not to willingly listen or read or watch anything of impure nature, but listening to a song by an artist who is bad is not necessarily a sin, as long as the song itself is good,
although if you knew of an artist who supports and contributes to abortion, it would probably be best not to buy anything from them,
personally i don’t listen to much modern music anymore, not just because there is so much of it that is trash, but also just because it’s to much of a bother worrying about what the lyrics are saying or what the artist got his inspiration from or whatever else, it’s just not worth it to me,
i don’t go around telling people not to listen to modern music of course, but growing up with rock and pop all my life, i personally know it’s effects on your mind and heart, and i just feel better and have more peace of mind without it…

well, i don’t personally think it would be a sin to buy good music from an artist who also does bad music, although i could be wrong, but you can always talk to your priest about it, just to be sure.

I agree with Emerald Wings. If a person is walking down the path of Christianity it is best to stay on the path. Wandering off the path leads one away from the goal.

Try listening to an artist like Rich Mullins instead. Here are a couple of his songs - Hold Me Jesus and Elijah.

The money you do not spend on suspect music can be donated to Catholic Relief Services for Haiti or for a local charity. Right now at St. Patrick’s we are collecting supplies for the Father Taffe Homes. These homes provide young women with an alternative solution to their dilemma of being pregnant out of wedlock. You will not miss the music or the money.

Limiting your sources of entertainment to those who aren’t sinful in some way will severly put a damper on the way you spend your free time.🙂

That said, there is also something to be said for buying the entertainment from, and therefore monetarily supporting, someone who you can reasonably deduce is more sinful than another. My guess is that this would be a case of greater good vs. lesser good and not a case of good vs. evil.

I’m not sure myself, but since I listen to a lot of indie experimental music I find that this isn’t as much of an issue since not everything I listen to even has lyrics and when it does oftentimes the lyrics are obscure.

does anyone ever wonder what people did before tv and computers and before music became so easy to listen to? they didn’t just stair at the walls…
i don’t watch tv, i don’t spend much time listening to music(although there’s nothing wrong with listening to good music as long as it’s not *to *much)
and i don’t play video games at all.
although i use to watch alot of tv, play alot of games, and listen to alot of music, it was the majority of my time spent, but now that that is not part of my life the way it was, i’m so much happier, i can think more clearly without all the constant noise, i have more time for God and prayer and spiritual reading, and i feel more fulfilled because of it…

of course i have lots of hobbies, mostly art cause that is just what i like, but it is not the highlight of my day, only a recreation…
well i’m making myself late for work now, so i’ll be going d: heh

that is probably true, but there is more to this. Would you welcome as good friends, listen to their ideas promoted in conversation, endorse their actions, go to their parties, surround yourself with them and people like them, if they were personal aquaintances? Then why would you support them by buying their products? They are selling a product and doing sacrilege to something sacred in order to do it. If you wish to participate in that part of the economy, then by all means do so, but do it in full knowledge that the principlal of GIGO applies to the human senses and intellect as well as to computers, and that every dime spent on this stuff promotes, endorses, accepts and praises it.
You will also be judged by what you read, watch and listen to as well, if that carries any weight.

Earlier I listed Rich Mullins as a muscian that has music I enjoy. Amy Grant has some music I like, too. Thy Word and El Shadai are two of my favorites.

So, there are 2 musicians and I have more I could mention. Not lacking in the music department.

Movies or plays? Have you heard of St. Luke Productions?

Right now Leonardo Defilippis is perfoming a play about St. John Vianney and is on tour. They also have a cool one man movie about St. Maximilian Kolbe.

Now, I also enjoy bicycle riding with my dog. The dog rides on the trailer. We were in Alaska last summer and when that 250 pound black bear came silently out of the brush a mere 15 yards ahead of us… well those were some interesting moments :bigyikes:

So, the choice to enjoy entertainment without the garbage is not limited. In fact it will be like finding a whole new world. Seek ye first the kingdom of God and its righteousness.

God bless
