Could people please give me some sources that are orthodox? I’m getting conflicting messages and am starting to cry. The reason why I like to go before the tablernacle is so I can be closer to Jesus. If I’m not supposed to be up there I won’t go up there but I want to know what the Church teaches and why…with credible sources.
In the old days, the laity stayed out of the Sanctuary because the tabernacle was there and Jesus was there. I would imagine it comes from the old Jewish Temple and the Holy of Holies. When I was a kid, the only ones permitted in the sanctuary were the Clergy, the Servers and outside of Mass those cleaning or setting up or whatever. Today after all these years I wouldn’t dream of entering the sanctuary except in one of those roles.
After Vatican II, there was a shift in peoples thinking and the Sanctuary lost in essence a lot of it’s sacredness. That is actually one of the reasons, among others, that the Tabernacle was moved. It was felt that with all the hustle and bustle that went on, people coming and going etc., that the tabernacle deserved a more quiet and respectful place. And withthe greater emphasis on the community, why not let the laity into the Sanctuary. After all, we are all Priests, not just the ordained. I never could understand that logic.
I would reccomend the following, which is what I do, if I am in a Church with no Altar rails. I kneel on the bottom step of the Sanctuary, just about where the Rail would have been. If in a Church with the Rails intact, I kneel there. You won’t be as close as you might be in an adoration Chapel or in a side chapel, but you will still be in the presence of God.
And I truly believe that is the important thing
