Actually, I belive you can receive twice, as long as the second time is within the context of the Mass. I’m not sure about if you attend Mass twice on one Sunday, how that works, but I think it’s probably the same. Someone else, I’m sure has the rule book…

I should clarify, I am asking because next weekend I think I will be attending Mass twice on Sunday.

If you attend two Masses then you may receive at both (assuming you are otherwise able to receive.)

As has been stated, you may receive twice during a day (reckoned from midnight to midnight) so long as the second time is at Mass. (The first time could have been at Mass or during some other kind of communion service in a Church, hospital, home, etc.)

You may receive twice as per Can. 917. Canon 921 refers to Viaticum and extends the allowance to a third if in danger of death after the second reception.
Can. 917 A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of can. 921, §2.

Can. 921 §1. The Christian faithful who are in danger of death from any cause are to be nourished by holy communion in the form of Viaticum.

Or is that not permitted?
It’s permitted. Here’s the English translation of the relevant canon law:

Can. 917 A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of ⇒ can. 921, §2.

Can. 918 It is highly recommended that the faithful receive holy communion during the eucharistic celebration itself. It is to be administered outside the Mass, however, to those who request it for a just cause, with the liturgical rites being observed.

Can. 921 §1. The Christian faithful who are in danger of death from any cause are to be nourished by holy communion in the form of Viaticum.

§2. Even if they have been nourished by holy communion on the same day, however, those in danger of death are strongly urged to receive communion again.

§3. While the danger of death lasts, it is recommended that holy communion be administered often, but on separate days.

I have always been led to believe that this is speaking in reference to those “participating” in the Mass, i.e. clergy, EMHC’s, lectors, musicians, etc. and not meant for those simply attending Mass (I know that they are participating also, but this is in a distinctly differenct manner).

Is there any reason why one should or should not recieve twice in the same day?

No, this is mistaken. You would not say that all the faithful are obliged to act as *“clergy, EMHC’s, lectors, musicians, etc.” *would you? cf.
Can. 1247 On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are obliged to participate in the Mass.

OK, is there a compelling reason to receive twice in a single day?

Once a month we have the ER in our Deanery. I still go to family Mass in the morning, but then take my sons to the ER in the afternoon. I was concerned about receiving communion twice, but asked several priests and was told it was OK! 👍

Do you consider that there is a “compelling” reason for a layman to receive even once in a day? If so, does this same reason suffice compel a second reception? Or to dispel one?

Yes, that wording had been confusing me a little bit. Thank you.

Pope Sixtus already allowed multiple H. Communion on one day. Myself I visit Mass up to three times on sundays at times.
