Can I bless my pet with Holy Water? He behaves much better when I do!

Holy Water is a sacramental that disposes us to the reception of grace. It has no effect on an animal. Having said that, I will be doing the blessing of animals on the feast of St. Francis and they will be sprinkled with holy water. So, if your pet is Catholic – go for it!

Deacon Ed so who will you be blessing the owners, the pets or both? I’ve never taken my Dog to our parish event.

The blessing is actually for the owners who, through their animals, are blessed.

Only if the pet is Catholic! 😛

Holy Water is sprinkled on inanimate objects, isn’t it? What effect does it have on them?

I put Holy Water on my dogs frequently.

My computer just wouldn’t start up once, so I used holy oil from a marian shrine…started up again 😃

About a year ago I watched a parish pet blessing by a priest. I was there to take photos and about a dozen or so owners were there with their pets of all kinds. Most of the animals were noisy and restless until prayers and blessing with Holy Water began. It was amazing how the animals immediately simmered down and were quiet throughout the blessing. One big old pooch came and layed himself on my feet!

I asked one of the priests at my parish to bless my greyhound and I both for work we were to begin at a nursing home.

He ended up comiing to my house and blessing the house, me, and both dogs! 🙂

I think my dog is considered to be a sacramental now. 😛

And they are both official “prayer dogs”…both for their company during prayer and the fact that they get into trouble or get into various things and that inspires me to pray!

They are very Catholic dogs. I actually sprinkle them with holy water all the time and both are wearing blessed guardian angel medals. On the medals is inscribed, “Guardian Angel, protect my pet.” There are also St. Francis medals, but I couldn’t find any in my area or online.

So yes, you can sprinkle your dog with holy water…after all, teh dog has life due to God’s grace, and in reality, that dog belongs to God. We are only stewards.

My mother always blessed herself with holy water every night before she went to bed, she said that her dog started to jump up on her bed when she would do that and just sit there in front of her. His little head would be cocked to one side like he was questioning her, saying, "hey, what about me?"so, she started blessing him too. I thought that was sweet.

I’m going to start spritzing my pooch with holy water too every night. I don’t think he’ll like it, but that’s ok. I’ll just blame it on you people. :tsktsk:

Many priests bless animals and sprinkle them with Holy Water,so what’s the problem with that?Animals are God’s creatures too, they have the right to be blessed, isn’t?:hmmm: So…go for it!!!👍

The rest of you have dogs, but around here, the pets are Cat-lic.👍

We ended up keeping an accidental litter in July 1991. They were all blessed in October of that year on St. Francis Day at our former parish school (along with a goat and quite an assortment of other pets). Excepting one we gave away, they are all still alive!!!

Docile? No. A bit demanding? Well…But for geriatric felines, they do OK.

I leave my TV on while I’m gone. On the EWTN channel that I get with Comcast Expanded Basic cable TV service that I pay for my cable TV coverage, of course!

Just before I shut the door on my way out, I frequently tell my guinea pig “I guess you’ll be Catholic by the time I come back!”

😛

One day, perhaps I’ll teach my guinea pig how to go into my home office, turn on my computer, crank up the speakers, and watch EWTN live from my computer –

We are having the blessing of the animals on October 1st this
year. If you have a pet and they are doing it at your church or
a nearby one, I would urge you to go. 'We look forward to taking
our pets each year. 🙂

Our Black Lab / Akita mix is named " Kolbe " after St. Maximilian. He wears a Miraculous Medal. I think Tomorrow he will get a sprinkling of Holy Water.
