Father,
Is it ok to stand during the Eucharistic prayer and genuflect or bow deeply when the Host is consecrated? Is the person wrong for doing so? The reason I ask, is that is seems that churches in South America and Europe tend to stand and in the U.S. it seems the parishoners generally kneel during the prayer. Thanks.

Hi,

The worldwide norm in the Western Church is that the faithful “should kneel at the consecration unless prevented by the lack of space, the number of people, or some other good reason (GIRM, General Instruction of the Roman Missal). In 1969 the National Conference of Catholic Bishops voted to extend the period of kneeling from the end of the Sanctus until after the Great Amen, just before the Our Father. (AGI, Appendix to the General Instruction for the Dioceses of the United States.)

The parishioners in those other countries should be kneeling for the consecration, unless prevented by a good reason.
