Is it OK to use contraception to regulate hormones?

Is it still a grave sin if my girlfriend, Non-Catholic going through RCIA, is using contraception to regulate her hormones, if we are both practicing chastity?

When she’s not on contraception she has very painful cycles, part of it is because of a rare medical condition she has similar to lupus.
