So I’m watching Bristol Palin dance and it starts out alright but than she starts thrusting her hips and we all know what that is suppose to represent.
I mean what is the line between good dancing and immoral dancing? I guess we will just know it when we see it.
Does anyone else get annoyed with this show when the dancing and outfits gets too dirty?

Swith over to “So You Think You Can Dance” and watch their same sex attracted male dancers in routines together.

They’re not yet grinding into each other, but I’m certain that those moves are on the agenda.

Not okay at all. If you ever admit that you watch that to another man you are almost certain to be laughed at. 😃

As an experienced ballroom and swing dancer myself, I often don’t have time to watch the show because I’m out dancing when its on! I do love to watch the professional dancers though, as they inspire me in my own dancing. I usually am not familiar with the stars, but it is fun to watch them learn to dance. 👍

I’m confussed. Is this Catholic answers or completely insane, born again, fire and brimestone, fundamentalist Christian forum?
If you’re so overcome by even the slightest titillation, that you’re slaughtering potential Christians night and day like a 13 year old boy, perhaps you should just lock yourself in the confessional and wait for judgment day.
I mean really, get a grip man.

The question I’m really trying to ask is, “What is the line between moral dancing and immoral dancing?”

I tend to think that any dance moves that make it look like your simulating something that should be only done in a bedroom between a husband and wife is wrong.
I’ve always wanted to learn how to jazz dance but there are some dirty moves when it comes to jazz dancing. Also the tango is a very passionate dance…but is it too passionate?

I was just wondering what the Churches position was on dancing?

Dancing = okay.

Semi-nude, semi-erotic dancing = pro’ly not so much.

So, I’m asking myself…Is there a good book or project I can immerse myself in rather than watch “mind-numbing” television programs with zero beneficial value of any kind?

If it drives you to sin, turn it off. As in, if you’re watching because you like sexual thoughts of Bristol, time to find another program.

Some people can keep it together given light stimulation. Others can’t. It’s up to you to decide where you are on the spectrum and act accordingly.

OK, I’m going to go out on a limb here, and risk that the moderators will jump on me…

First of all, I would turn off the program. Why? Because Bristol Palin is not exactly what I consider a “paragon of virtue”. She comes from a “supposedly religious family” but yet couldn’t say no to her boyfriend and she ended up with an illegitimate child, getting pregnant at the age of 17!! Then she supposedly was named as a spokesperson for “abstinence”…(what a laugh). Second I would probably throw the TV out the window… I guess if you want to watch prurient trash TV and then want to ask if its OK…that’s up to you. If you had to ask the question, you already knew the answer… or are you seeking approval?

Truthfully, I watch precious little TV…nowadays its the Weather Channel, Food Channel, Travel Channel…and beyond that the “Big Bang” and one or two other shows… Other than that I read or do this occasionally. TV is nowadays a real disappointment.

First let me say sorry to everyone for not putting this topic in the “Popular Media” section.

The show really isn’t that trashy…its just every now and then it gets dirty. Palins dance was ok but had that one dirty move in it.

I guess what I’m looking for is the Churches position on dancing. I mean some religious groups like the Puritans outlawed dancing…I can sort of understand why because dancing could lead to sin but my feeling is the Puritans went too far.

Also…I could be wrong about this but in the past ABC has called, Dancing With the Stars a family program.

PS- I tend to watch the History Channel and I do read. Just got done with “Empires of the Sea,” by Roger Crowely…about siege of Malta and the Battle of Lepento…it was very good.

There is no bright line between modest and immodest dancing, because, as the Church points out, modesty is an absolute virtue, but modest behaviour is actually culturally relative:

Catechism #2524 said:
2524. The forms taken by modesty vary from one culture to another. Everywhere, however, modesty exists as an intuition of the spiritual dignity proper to man. It is born with the awakening consciousness of being a subject. Teaching modesty to children and adolescents means awakening in them respect for the human person.

There is always a certain sexual component to dancing. As Frank Sinatra asked, “'cause what is dancing but making love set to music playing?” Where the line crosses into immodesty depends on the culture, on the context, and most importantly on the disposition of the dancer in question. It sounds to me like Bristol is trying to be immodest, in which case, yes, she’s over the line. But she’s not grinding (which involves actual physical stimulation of venereal pleasure – i.e. masturbation), and she’s not doing anything explicitly erotic or especially out-of-bounds for our present cultural modesty context, so… maybe she’s just, you know, dancing the way her generation dances, with no intent to “unveil what should remain hidden,” as the Catechism writes.

I’m inclined to say, yes, she’s dancing in an immoral manner, but it’s not a question that has a clear correct answer.

Thats a good point about how it depends on the culture. Latin cultural dancing tends to be more passionate than well northern european dancing. (tango vs. the waltz…im not an expert on dancing so im just guessing on that one) Also when the missionaries in hawaii saw hula dancing they thought it was immodest…but i think the hula dance was toned down and slowly became acceptable.
