Is it okay to attend a homosexual "marriage" as a Catholic?

My brother-in-law and his partner are getting “married” and have asked my husband and I to attend and have also asked my husband to be the “best man”. I have never seen my brother-in-law more happy and healthy than he is right now and his partner is an amazing individual. I want to attend; however, as a practicing Catholic I feel I would be “supporting” their marriage which I do not. Is it wrong for a Catholic to attend/stand in a homosexual wedding? How do we go about loving our neighbors and family members such as Christ has told us when it comes to this issue?

Dear friend,

We love people by supporting them in the truth. We don’ love them by supporting them in the lie. What we experience now passes very quickly. Eternity is a long, long time. I cannot advise you to support them in this unreality–regardless of what our culture currently celebrates. Spend an hour before the Blessed Sacrament for them. Now that’s the kind of support that will truly help them! I will pray for them as well.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
