I bough a book. I have a concern: don’t build up treasures. What should I do, should I ask for a refund or keep it as it is?

You can just send it to me if it will make you feel better. 🤔

Seriously, though, we are called not to be overly attached to the things of this world. Radical poverty, such as what St. Francis of Assisi practice, is for very few.

I dare say there is not a single person on CAF that does not own a book. Books, like many things, are tools that can help is our daily temporal lives, as well as be beneficial for our spiritual lives in the here and now and for all eternity.

If it’s a “good” book. I think you can keep it. If you want to give it away after you read it. That’s not a bad idea. But it is optional.

Your recent post show a high degree of scrupulosity. You are afraid of your salvation, you stated, and are even afraid of buying a book! This is not Christ-like freedom. I’d urge you to get a spiritual advisor and not rely on a public forum for advice on a serious matter. Spiritual fear/scrupulosity is very serious. Please seek help from a priest.

Where in the world would you get an idea like this?

I agree also with above poster @Limoncello4021.

If you’re sincerely worried that buying a book is somehow wrong, then you are suffering from level 10 SEVERE scruples.

If you don’t get this under control, there’s a good chance you’ll lose your faith entirely when you crumble under the crushing weight of those scruples. Jesus isn’t a harsh taskmaster - his yoke is sweet, his burden light.

So it is okay to buy things for Knowledge, to grow in Knowledge? It is just to to strive for showing off and solely gaining lavish goods?

Well, I don’t think you need to buy that $5,000 rolex watch, if that is what you’re asking me.

Why don’t we let a professional diagnose scrupulously, if that is indeed what she’s suffering from?

What a goofy question! Read the book. When you are done, donate it to St. Vinny’s. Problem solved.

Do you need a fireman to tell you that flames and smoke are a fire? I didn’t need a dentist to identify the problem when my filling fell out and my tooth started hurting; I just needed him to fix it.

When a person doesn’t know whether or not it’s ok to make a minor purchase, there’s clearly a malformation of conscience/spiritual awareness.

I am scrouplous myself and I recognize this as a concern about something that is an objectively normal thing to do.

I suppose that as long as you don´t buy too much or end up caring way too much about materialism, then it´s completely okay. The thing is that we shouldn´t waste our money, and buying one book isn´t to waste your money.

I measure my words carefully, or I try to. Notice I said « apparent », which means it appears to be. But I didn’t diagnose and in fact suggested both spiritual direction and professional help.

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI is in serious trouble if what you believe is true. I read his personal collection has 30,000 books.

There is nothing sinful in purchasing and owning things.

I do not know if you have scrupulosity and/or a mental health issue. Speak with your parish priest and/or confessor. Talking to your family doctor would not be a bad idea either.

This is key. There’s a difference between giving medical/psychological advice yourself and merely advising the person to seek expert help.

If someone tells me they’re coughing up blood, I’m not going to diagnose them myself, but i am going to strongly suggest they go to the hospital.
