As a Catholic is it okay to decorate your home for Halloween? I’m not talking about creepy decor, I’m just talking about cute pumpkins, and perhaps some ghosts.

Thanks for your help!

Hanging up additional pictures and posters of saints both inside and out are a greet way to decorate to celebrate All Saints’ eve.

Hey this would be a good time for teachers of CCD to pass out some holy cards and quick description of all souls and saints day.

Decorating for Halloween is so much fun. The kids love it. The creepy stuff if done right is great. I have neighbors who go all out with that and it just makes for a much more fun trick or treat. But, I am not very creative so whenever I have tried to decorate like that it never looked right to me. So, I stick to the pumpkins and scarecrows. I decorate with a fall theme more then a creepy theme.

I am not against creepy. If it is done tastefully and in the spirit of fun and not to advocate a satanic type of belief.

There can be some strange people out there. A few years ago I went to my local animal shelter to adopt a cat. I had just moved into a country setting and was afraid that field mice might decide to make my garage their permanent residence. I always had a cat growing up and I have found if you want mice to stay away get a cat.

When I went to the shelter it just happened to be the week leading up to Holloween. I went in and picked out a beautiful orange tabby cat who was aching for me to take him home. Every time I passed his cage he reached out to grab me. I said OK you are the one.

When I was signing the papers to adopt the shelter worker was asking me some strange questions concerning why I wanted a cat. She commented that she would have been more concerned if I had asked specifically for a black cat. At this time of year they will not adopt out any black cat. I found out that people use them for satanic reasons at Holloween time and will more then likely kill them in a sacrifice:mad: . Ugh, You learn something new every day. It never even occured to me that these things go on. 😦

though i don’t really worry about satanic sacrifices as much as teenage pranks…I have a sweet little balck cat named sophie that I rescued from an abusive home… I’m afraid of letting her outside at night in the days of halloween…kids can be so mean, and because I now live in the city, I don’t know what to expect from teens down here. It’s funny, i talk like I’m older…I’m only 20.

I have to admit that I love the fall and especially Halloween! I love pumpkins and hay bails and corn stalks. We dress up as Saints and attend a Saint party every year but I also let my kid go trick or treating.

The black cat thing worries me. We have a black cat (named after St. Francis) and I’m terrified he will escape around Halloween. I want to leave him in the basement until November gets here.

Sure, as long as it’s tasteful.

Frankly, I hate Halloween. Candy is expensive, and the time between Halloween and Christmas seems to fly by. When Halloween rolls around, I think to myself, “It’ll be Christmas before we know it.” BJs has had fake trees for sale since September. JC Penney has had a tree and ornament display up since mid Sept. Sheesh! —KCT

I don’t like Halloween. This is not for any religious reason, but because the teenagers of my area seem to think that fireworks should be used as missiles! However I don’t think there is any harm in decorating your home. The Catholic secondary school (or *high school, *as you Americans would call it) that I went to was run by priests and we usually had some sort of decoration at Halloween.

Oh, how horrible! (Not you adopting a cat, the part about the satanic stuff.)

I have a gorgeous and very sweet black cat named Max, who did the exact same thing when I went to the shelter that your cat did (reaching out of the cage, along with howling until I took him out of the cage). I can’t imagine anyone being able to do such a horrid thing.

Otherwise, I think decorating for Halloween is fine. I voted for “in moderation”, just because I think overdone is tacky for any holiday. I’ll definitely have pumpkins, and maybe some of that fake cobweb stuff on the porch.

OK. I have seen various forms of Halloween decorations. Some are harmless, such as Jack o’ Lanterns and spiderwebs. And then there is the borderline demonic - decomposed corpse zombies and so forth. I guess it is always good to go in moderation and keep away from the freaky stuff.

I wonder if the whole “black cat sacrifices” are more hype than truth? Just like the razor blade in the candy bar scares. I’ve never heard of anyone having their black cat snatched on Halloween, have you?

BTW- Since it was Holloween time and my cat was orange I named him Pumpkin. He grew to be a 40 pound cat. He sure lived up to his name.😃

When I moved from Texas to Florida I gave him to my friend. That was about ten years ago. I have not been intouch with this friend for several years so I am not sure what became of my cat Pumpkin.

Anyway, someone was mentioning how early they put out the Christmas decor in stores now. Living in Florida is hard enough on a New England transplant at Christmas time. It took me a long time to get used to looking at Christmas decor in 90 degree heat wearing summer appearal.

When I was a little girl the Christmas displays were not put up in stores until the day after Thanksgiving. It made it so much more special and exciting to go downtown and look into the store windows at the creative and beautiful displays the stores would have. Oh well, times change.

I think it is…
i mean i dont see nothing wrong with it

God Bless!

I think it depends on where you live and where these groups live. Where I lived in Texas they had been having a problem and dead and mutilated cats had been found in what looked like ritual observances.

But, in some instances they believed it was coyotes. If they disappear without a trace it is probably coyotes. Everyone in my neighborhood lost a cat to what we think was coyotes. But, obviously there were more sinister things going on if the Shelter was taking precautions. They had evidence that made them feel they needed to be more careful.

We usually decorate with fall themes, pumpkins, scarecrows, etc. My kids will dress up as saints and they will either go to an All Saints party or they will go around the neighborhood. They have chosen to do the neighborhood thing this year.

I refuse to decorate my house that would in any way celebrate or bring attention to the demonic. (e.g., vampires, walking dead, etc.) If people want to celebrate the blood and guts stuff, well the church is the place to look. I have always wanted to decorate my house for Halloween celebrating the saints; or how they died. Like having a figure of a man crucified upside down, (St. Peter) or one burned at the stake, (St. Joan of Arc). How about St. Paul; when he was beheaded his head bounced three times and three springs of water came up from the ground; as legend tells. I can imagine my whole yard decorated with how the saints held firm until the end. At the very least, it would be a conversion piece.

(still imagining :hmmm: )

We love Halloween! We have a huge pumpkin carving party the night before (friends, family, & neighbors are invited) and we decorate the house, inside and out, and then we have a party on Halloween and of course trick-or-treating.

Then the morning of All Saint’s we clean up all the Halloween stuff and put up All Saints stuff, like little holy cards etc. We have an All Saints party, dress up like saints, go to Mass, etc. For some reason this transition from Halloween to All Saints is really a wonderful event in my family. It seems to make a huge impression not only on us, but on our visiting friends and neighbors.

I decorate, but keep it minimally scary. I have Snoopy with a witches hate on the lawn, and cat in front of a moon and little plastic pumpkins hanging from trees.
