I am currently in high school, and one of my best friends is gay. He often talks with me about guys he likes (some of these conversations can get quite explicit), and I have even helped him to make contact with “cute” guys online.

He will get involved in romantic relationships in the future with or without my help, but I want to know if it is morally wrong for me to support him. And if it is, is having done so something that I should confess before taking communion?

Where does friendship cross the line of morality? Is it all right for me to simply listen to him talk about his romantic interests? May I verbally support him (like I would any female friend)? May I introduce him to guys he might like?

I am very conflicted over this issue and would appreciate any help you could give me. Thank you!

Dear friend,

To encourage your friend toward a life-style that is sinful, is not helping him. Such behavior on your part is sinful. To the degree that you didn’t know it was sinful, you haven’t sinned. But you must not continue to do so.

Our culture tells us that a life without genital sexual experience will be miserable. But this does not have to be the case. I did an interview in the March 09 issue of “This Rock” magazine with a man who gave up a seven-year same sex relationship in order to live as a faithful Catholic and he is quite fulfilled.

When we put Jesus first in life, we know a peace and joy that cannot be found by living a life that is contrary to what He wants from us. What you need to do is help your friend find Christ’s love. It is the only love that will fulfill him because he was created for it. Your friend is in our prayers. I will privately send you an attachment to the interview I just mentioned. It’s too long to put here.
