Is it okay to like the new Taylor Swift?

So we all know Taylor Swift’s PR has changed a lot. I wouldn’t really be asking this question if it was the old Taylor, but something about her new music nowadays really rubs me the wrong way, it all seems very lusty and watered-down compared to her old stuff. I feel bothered singing along to some of the lyrics in her new album when they talk about inviting men to her bedroom, being vengeful, or getting drunk. I also get the whole “snake” reference but it also bothers me that it’s become her new icon, because you know, snake, Eden, etc…
As a Catholic, I know the truth about love and it’s obvious I’m not gonna get that out of pop culture, but there’s also nothing wrong per say with enjoying music/movies/tv, as long as you stay true to God.
I don’t think she’s a bad person(and because I don’t know her personally) and I believe deep down she’s still the girl who wants a fairytale romance but I believe she has become influenced by the world a lot. She has been a favorite of mine for a long time but I am wondering if I should take a break from her and hope she turns her image around in the future? Is God trying to tell me something? Either way I think we should all pray for her.

Praying for people is always a good idea. If it’s bothering you enough that you have to post it on the internet maybe you should just stick to her older stuff. You know just “Shake it off.”

well i figure there’s other people out there who have mixed feelings about her new stuff

Well, I’m not Catholic so feel free to take what I say with a pinch of salt. But I think a lot of her newest album is really intended at playing up to her characterisation in the media - I don’t think a lot of it is 100% serious and what she really thinks herself. But there is some more explicit content than on her older albums so if that bothers you, I wouldn’t listen to them.

People do grow up and mature. So do public images. In cases like this, I stick to the older, more innocent material.

This is true of nearly everyone in the entertainment industry. They may start out with something genuine, but it doesn’t last.

So to the OP, it’s all a show, don’t put much thought into analyzing it.

One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them in the land of Mordor where the shadows lie.
IMO, anyone who takes part in the pop music culture accepts one the nine from Sauron. In the end it will corrupt them.
And one by one, sooner or later, according to their native strength and to the good or evil of their wills in the beginning, they fell under the thralldom of the ring that they bore and of the domination of the One which was Sauron’s.
I think that Taylor Swift began good and wholesome, but upon entering that sort of lifestyle, began to fall. She lasted longer than most, but as you say, there is this latest album…

We should pray for her.

Yeah honestly, nowadays I look up more to Catholic speakers and artists who have committed marriages and families, than any of the mainstream artists. While none of us are perfect, I admire people who encourage the younger generation to strive for goodness and holiness in our lives through their careers

your post makes me want to read lord of the rings now, by the way

Mate, you wouldn’t want to come into this house with our Jazz, Hip Hop, Death metal, Classical, and all the music under the sun being played. 🤣

IMHO music can be enjoyed, as long as you are aware of what is being said and you can answer any questions people have when they hear what you are listening to.

she brought it back for her cover of “september” but got a lot of hate for it.

I think MCH1 meant taking part as in having a career in the pop music industry. Pretty much every pop artist over the past 50 years has taken a turn for the dark side, some come out of it, others choose to get comfy there. Unless you live in Amish country or something. you will probably hear pop music whether or not you want to.

Taylor Swift goes home to her cats.

What dark side is she participating in?

Having been hanging around the music business for too many years:
  • If a record makes you feel uncomfortable or sinful, then don’t listen to it.
  • If you’re worried about an artist “taking a turn for the dark side” and you don’t personally know the individual, as in you are not their friend or family member, you don’t hang out with them or talk on the phone with them on a regular basis, then you need to accept that you know nothing about what this person is doing in their non-public time and move on and get yourself a hobby…or else if you want to theorize or talk about them a lot, find a fan board and do it there.
Also: Most people over about age 25 and outside of a fan forum don’t care about these people beyond maybe head-bobbing to a song they hear that they might not even know the artist who sings it.

umm as music tends to influence people and society, especially an artist that has fans mostly under 21 and sings about content that is generally for people 21+. I personally don’t care what Taylor does in her personal life, it’s not my business. Like I said, if you had actually read my OP, I am not judging her as a person because I don’t know her, I am just discussing her current music and the messages she is trying to send through it.
Also, this is a public forum and people can discuss anything that they would like to discuss, whether or not either of us care about it, especially if they want a catholic perspective on the topic. I happen to want to discuss it, so I can post this question, and you can choose to respond or not respond to it, as many of the other people who have read or replied to have done. I don’t respond to posts I don’t care about, but I don’t reply to those people telling them that nobody cares about their post, it is frankly very impolite.
Many Catholic communities such as LifeTeen actually do discuss pop culture and music because it is pertinent to the developing generation, since many millennials have an attachment to the arts. And there are a lot of people under 25 on this forum.

It’s too bad she got flack for that. Her cover of “September” is one of my favs.

I liked it too! I could actually understand the lyrics of the song this time xD
