Is it okay to like the new Taylor Swift?

I guess @joyful that celebrities change. If they were a minor when they started, their artistic talent and image were managed by others. We saw the outcome of that with Britney Spears.

Growing up in the public eye is something I am glad I didn’t do.

When these artists and celebrities grow up, mentally and legally, a lot of them want to be their own person. I couldn’t imagine having everything managed, I also would want to “break free”. A lot of them then go to the polar opposite, and get hypersexual because they have had to cultivate such a PG-friendly look for so long.

In around 5 years time Taylor Swift will probably be a mature adult, who has found her longterm adult self.

Right now, I wouldn’t fault her for trying to figure things out.

Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga, they all went from one end to another.

Taylor was 16 when her career took off. I remember the commercial she did for the Preds shortly before she became famous.😀

Yep, so she had a carefully managed image to appeal to teens, preteens, and their parents.

So much pressure not to stuff anything up, but saying once the wrong thing, wearing the wrong clothes, having an opinion, etc.

Once she grew out of that market, and the preteens and teens also grew up—her market age increased and she can be a little free-er.

yeah I agree on that front. A lot of her original audience will probably find her current music more relevant since most of them are legal now. It’s just there are so many little girls at her concerts, even today, and she literally sings a song about buying a dress just to make a guy want to undress her(it’s called “Dress” if you want to look it up)…Not all her new songs are like that of course, there are some good ones

I understand your concern, it’s up to the parents to help their children and not the artist. If the parents think its okay for children to listen to that, then you shouldn’t put the weight on the artist on change or censor themselves.

That’s a different argument all together. 🙂

I say no, I wouldn’t listen to her new stuff. There are better ways to pass time than listening to music that glorifies revenge or fornication. We may not think or want to accept that it has an influence, but I suspect it does.

I meant the music performers themselves, not those listening to the music

I misunderstood! Apologies! 🙂

IMHO I still don’t think that being a music performers means that they corrupt themselves.

I wouldn’t think they corrupt themselves, I’d more say that their environment corrupts them. In a culture where sin is often glorified, those who try to fit in will cave.

I think you would treat her as literally any other celebrity. Don’t idolize them and pray for them instead. You can listen to her music but with all other forms of media, your faith comes first.

As for my own opinion, her new album seems to be her way of just letting everything out/playing to what people think of her. I just read on social media that she said this album was a cathartic experience and she is glad that she can write regular songs again after this. So that’s good news for you, lol!

If it bothers you, don’t listen.

They’re public figures and we only see what they want us to see. Old Taylor may look wholesome but she could be sinning as much as she is now. We should not look up to celebrities/politicians/etc as some sort of role model in terms of morals, imo.

it’s true, many people nowadays who dont support abortion or gay marriage or fornication have a tougher time getting jobs in the entertainment industry, unless youre like mel gibson and talk about your faith after you are successful

My girls like pop upbeat music and after listening to the Top 40 station a few times I am beside myself. Every song is basically about sex. I don’t understand why the masses listen to this music and let their innocent children sing along.
I really don’t understand and it makes me feel like an alien in this world.

Mate, you wouldn’t want to come into this house with our Jazz, Hip Hop, Death metal, Classical, and all the music under the sun being played. 🤣
Are you at my house? 😍😍😆😆

Seriously. This is our house any day of the week. We got Taylor, we got AC/DC, we got Michael Jackson, husband has The Smiths (I can’t claim them, LOL), we got Mozart, I got a bit of Hillsong Worship thrown in there…lol.

I don’t even have kids and this makes me cringe as well. I can’t imagine.

I feel like it has got a lot worse. When I was a kid they were a lot more subtle about sex and there were a lot of mainstream songs about love/feelings, like boy bands and such. I don’t really get into modern music as much as that 20-30 years ago. The issue is today not that they talk about sex but the give such a shallow/superficial representation of it. But hey, I guess it opens the door for that conversation with the kids huh?
