Is it okay to miss Mass because of a death in the family?

My brother-in-law died and I traveled to be with my sister and didn’t get there in time for either Saturday vigil or Sunday Mass. Due to him being buried in another state, I may miss more Masses. To my knowledge, except for this, I am a Catholic in good standing. Will missing Mass(es) be considered a sin, and must I go to confession before I can take the body and blood when I do next get to Mass?

I am so sorry for your loss, and will keep the matter in prayer.

If you honestly could not go to Mass due to travel, then that is just reason to miss Mass on a Sunday or holy day of obligation. But I am curious as to why you assume that you cannot go to Mass while visiting family out of state. Is there no public transportation available? Is there no sympathetic relative or friend you can importune for a ride? If you do everything you can to find a Mass to attend, but are not able to do so, that is just reason to miss Mass. But if you are assuming that you need not attend Mass merely because you are out of town at the moment, I’m afraid that is not correct. If it is possible to do so, you are required to go to Mass while out of town.
