Is it okay to pray for an evil organization to cease to exist?

I know I have created a similar thread on this before but I don’t remember where it is and I have no link to it. So, my question is: Is it okay to pray for an evil organization such as Planned Parenthood to cease to exist? I could also phrase it in a different way: Would it have been okay for a Jewish person or any other anti-Nazi person to pray for the Nazi organization to cease to exist back during World War II?
 
I don’t think it would be wrong as long as you don’t pray for the people who fund and run those organizations to be obliterated. I think a lot of people, especially Catholics, pray for Planned Parenthood to cease to exist.
 
It’s okay to pray for the organization not to exist, as long as you don’t pray for the people to die or anything.
 
Absolutely. We pray every 40 Days for Life for every abortion facility to close. We don’t wish evil on the employees, in fact 40 Days for Life has helped many former abortion workers to find new jobs and supported them.

In your original post you asked if you could pray for “bad” to happen to the organization. And that answer is no. You cannot pray to God, who is all Good, for “bad” things.

The question is ambiguous – what does it mean to cease to exist?

While 75% of what they do is reproductive, the remaining 25% is for cancer screening, pap smears, breast exams and STD diagnosis and treatment.

The answers were in your other post. Many suggested to pray for their conversion – that they change the agenda. Or that woman who are thinking of going for an abortion change their mind.

You may pray that the federal government ceases to fund them.

You were going to pray for conversion of those in planned parenthood. Pray positively – not with negative thoughts.

If you are addressing me, I have already read the daily devotional for February 24th, yesterday. 40 Days for Life does in fact pray for and rejoice over the closing of abortion clinics. See the second article on their home page, which ends “With the closure of the Storm Lake Planned Parenthood center, this will now make 21 abortion centers that have shut down during or following 40 Days for Life campaigns outside their doors. To God be the glory, and congratulations to all the pro-life groups and individuals in these cities whose years of fervent prayers and faithful efforts have been rewarded!”

I think one should pray for the elimination of the evil. However, leave it to God how He does it - conversion, destruction, or whatever.

Note how God got rid of Saul by converting him to Paul.

God did not get rid of Saul – converting someone is not getting rid of them. He admonished him and spoke to him so that he would change his ways and stop persecuting Christians and become a Christian himself. He changed Saul’s way of thinking and converted him.

And that’s what we should pray for – a change in the way of thinking in this country about abortion, contraception and pray that the people who make the decisions at PP open their heart to hear the Word. **A conversion. **. And for those women who see the sonogram that they change their mind and that they find a way to raise the baby or place the baby up for adoption. So, we should, as Catholics, should also be helping those women find another way and that means being supportive in any way we can, and then some. A positive approach would be for we, the Church, and for God to help us and the women to keep their babies. Pray for that.

And that’s the new Word – to change your way of thinking. We can pray to God to work His Good upon evil and bad things, but we cannot pray for evil to happen to evil. It is negative and prayer should always speak to God in a positive manner to bring about “GOOD.”

There are others here who are thinking of the Church and some who are coming home. There are many non-Christians who might be here for a reason and are exploring the faith. Let’s not obfuscate so that the message becomes confusing to those who are still learning.

Pray for bad things to happen – never. Pray for the Good that comes from God.

I think it is within the bonds of charity to pray for a sweeping failure of all of Huffington Posts’ servers. Also, for HufPo and for Larry Doyle personally, parking tickets and car towings, flats and transmission problems, unrecoverable hard drive failures for every computer of every employee at work and at home, toothaches and chilblains, an invasion of bedbugs, incessant diarrhea, relentless dandruff and all manner of mange for their pets and for their pets’ offspring.

When I pray for an evil organization such as Planned Parenthood or an abortion clinic to cease to exist, I do that because I believe those organizations are evil. When it comes to the people who work there, I do not wish any evil on them, instead, I pray for their conversion to Catholicism, the one true Church.
 
I think, perhaps, it makes more sense to pray for the folks running, funding and participating those organizations.
 
To me, thats like praying that the satanic religion goes away. Yes its a good thing to pray for it to go away.

Perhaps. I mean if all of the pro-abortion people in this world converted to the pro-life position then obviously Planned Parenthood with either no longer exist or at the very least they would no longer be involved in the abortion business. Ideally they wouldn’t give out contraception to people either. Personally I would hope that Planned Parenthood would just cease to exist considering its exceptionally evil past and its founder who supported eugenics in order to exterminate the African-American race.

This is taken out of context. Fr. Z talks about praying for mange on their dogs. It’s humor because he thinks that Larry Doyle, who purposts to be a humorist, is not funny.

Fr. Z says seriously:

Fr. Z was joking.

But anyone who does not understand, is seeking, or a non-Catholic could be misinformed – that praying for “bad” or “evil” is advocated by the Church, which it is not.

Realistically, there are more religions in this country and in the world that do not hold to our faith.

Right now the Evangelicals and Baptists (probably the Lutherans too) are behind us in the mandate – because they do not view us as trying to eliminate all contraception, nor impose our will. They are behind us because they realize that the mandate infringes on our ability to practice and not show support for a contrary Church teaching – and because some tenant of theirs will be next if they don’t get behind us now.

If we were viewed as trying to impose religious law on the secular for everyone, they would leave us alone in this fight. And we need them now.

Realistically, this can only fall one step at a time – one change at a time.
