Is it okay to sleep under the same roof?

I’ve been seeing someone in Los Angeles (I’m in San Diego) who lives with a roommate. I’ve stayed at her place (on the couch) overnight before. Recently, her roommate said that it was inappropriate for two people that are romantically involved to sleep at the same place even if we’re in different rooms. Is it appropriate for a long-distance Catholic couple to stay in the same place overnight in different rooms? Thanks for your insight!

It’s probably okay, particularly when there is a “chaperone,” of sorts, in the orthodox Catholic roommate. That said, the problem of potential scandal should not be dismissed lightly and neither should the feelings of the roommate. Perhaps this objection is being offered rather than a more blunt admission that the roommate just isn’t comfortable with the amount of time you’ve been crashing in her home. In any case, I can only recommend making alternative arrangements when staying overnight in your girlfriend’s city.
