Smoking cigarettes and beer is usually frowned on by society sort of, but I was wondering on the Catholic view. Growing up, smoking was practically equated with sin and drugs (but of course, condoms was okay 🤷).

And I guess while I’m asking, is it okay to download a movie, and buy the movie later if you like it? I do it this way to save money.

Smoke: yes. An Indulgence was granted during the Jubilee year 2000 if one abstained from smoking. One does not receive an Indulgence for abstaining from sinful behavior.
Drink: Yes. But not to drunkenness.
Both of these are subject to the civil laws concerning age and so on.
Downloading movies for the free trial is fine, if the owners offer it.

You might want to try the search function, as all of your questions have been asked many, many, many times before here.

Drinking in moderation, responsibly is acceptable.

Smoking cigarettes is considered to be a defilement of the body, I cannot judge but I would consider it a venial sin.

FWIW I gave up smoking about two years ago and am thankful that I did. I will admit that I have smoked on occasion since but it has only been for 1-2 days in any instance. I don’t want to go back to doing it and even after the last time I gave myself excuses to smoke I regretted it because of the adverse affects it had on my body for at least a week afterwards.

Truly the older you get, the harder it is to quit and the toll it takes on your body is much worse. For me its gotten to the point where it truly isn’t worth it to have even one cigarette for any reason.

Minion - ā€œIf the owners offer itā€ is important for the download question. Most ā€œfreeā€ movie downloads are not authorized by the copyright owners and would not qualify here. Only a few independent filmmakers would do this. Major Hollywood producers do not allow free downloads.

If you aren’t sure whether you want to own a particular film, try to borrow a copy from a friend or rent it, first.

Hmmm…which one?

If I never smoked before in my life, is it okay for me to pick up a pack of cigarettes just to try it?

What if this isn’t viable? For example, a lot of foreign horror movies and anime is virtually unattainable for rental, only made available by fansubbing groups (fansub groups upload a movie with english subtitles).

.
Why? Lung disease, heart disease, Cancer, etc.
There is no good to come from inhaling poisen into your body.

The Catechism states: 2290 The virtue of temperance disposes us to avoid every kind of excess: the abuse of food, alcohol, tobacco, or medicine. Those incur grave guilt who, by drunkenness or a love of speed, endanger their own and others’ safety on the road, at sea, or in the air.

So, smoking in moderation is not sinful.

It is all right to smoke and drink in moderation. So yes, if you wished to try a cigarette then it is morally acceptable. Tobacco has been demonized by the general public, not the church. If you have lung cancer though and a doctor has told you smoking will cause immense harm to your health then you shouldn’t. As long as you do not get drunk it is acceptable to drink. Drunkenness is defined as when you are at the point you lose your sense of reason, so the amount that you drink depends on your body.

Downloading movies for free violates copyright laws and is stealing. Netflix has a great archive of foreign movies and anime that you can rent through the mail. A lot of people try to justify illegally downloading movies and music but the fact is it is stealing. Is a 2 hour movie worth turning your back on God?

So as long as I get a pic of JPII smoking a cigarette, I’m set? I am worried about how easily things like this becoming an addiction though.

Netflix movies selection suck 😦

Fansubs really aren’t an alternative? Is there a specific Magisterium/Catechism-ish thing that says specifically downloading movies for the purposes I mentioned (intending to buy it later if I like the movie) is wrong? Sort of like the citation for smoking?

Smoking tobacco is all about ā€œenslavementā€. When you are a slave, you are bound. When you are bound, you are in chains. When you are in chains…the Devil has you. You’re body is a temple for the Holy Spirit. Keep that in mind. The Holy Spirit wants you pure, not defiled. Jesus would have never condoned it…go here and read all about why it it morally wrong:

Here we go again…
  1. abstaining for at least one whole day from unnecessary consumption (e.g., from smoking or alcohol, or other goods of one’s choice), or,
ewtn.com/jubilee/indulgence/charity_and_penitence.htm#penitence

Take it up with the Pope. He wouldn’t have offered an indulgence for abstaining from murder, or masturbation, or shoplifting, would he? Why? Because they’re sins. Smoking isn’t.

It ain’t the smartest thing to do - I freely tell people the single dumbest thing I’ve ever done was buying a pack of cigarettes after I hiked out of the Grand Canyon after being stopped for 9 months - but this fingerpointing is getting real old.

It might not be classified a sin, but it is bad, and if you do it enough and get hooked and don’t quit, it very well can destroy your health, and could even lead to a ghastly death sooner then might be expected. You have free will. It’s up to you, the choice is yours. All I’m saying is that thousands of people who laid on their death beds from smoking related illnesses, usually regretted their smoking habit, and mostly all them wished they had never started and/or quit. Unfortunately, at that point it was too late.

Again, your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. What do you suppose God would say if you repeatedly defile it, and then it kills you??? Who knows, huh? I myself know many people that died of smoking related deaths…emphysema and cancer mostly. And for the record, I smoked for many years. I quit because I didn’t like being nicotine’s slave anymore. I wanted to be free from it. I didn’t like the constant monkey on my back. The nagging craving sucks. It gets to a point where your whole life is scheduled around your addiction, and satisfying it.

Alcohol has always been a significant aspect of Catholic culture. Beer is typically available at Catholic festivals, weddings, and celebrations for any occasion. Some of the greatest breweries in the world were originally founded and maintained by Catholics.
In fact, Annheuser-Busch (Budweiser, Bud Light) and Miller Brewing Company (Miller High Life, Miller Lite) were both founded by German Catholic immigrants.
In addition, here’s a link to a Catholic blog on beer, it’s moto is ā€œwere faith meets brewā€.

1, Smoking can and frequently does cause serious health problems. The risk of being adversely affected by cigarette use is high. Since we’re not supposed to deliberately harm ourselves, we shouldn’t smoke. Having said that, since smoking is highly addictive, having once started, the inability or difficulty in giving up would probably represent a strong mitigation since you would not have the full effect of your will when being tempted by the addiction to smoke.

2, Beer is fine. Plenty of monks used to not only drink it but brew it as well. I’m pretty sure some still do. As with the answer above though, do not drink so much as to cause yourself harm or to cause you to risk bringing harm to others. That would be sinful.

3, If you can get a legitimate free trial of something and decide upon having enjoyed it that you want to pay for it or else delete it, then no problem. If you are not offered that opportunity by the person/organisation who’s right it is to offer such an opportunity, then NO, you may not. It would be theft and that is mortal, since you would be enjoying the fruit of someone else’s labour without having first compensated them for it. You would never find a cinema offering a ā€œPay us afterwards only if you like itā€ offer. They would rapidly go broke. So no, you may not use ā€˜bit torrents’ or other technological means to obtain movies via download without having first paid for them. If you want to watch something new, check out the reviews and the publicly available trailers first.

Pope John XXIII was supposed to live for a very short time. He succeeded Pius XII, who had a 19 year pontificate. None of the Cardinal Electors could come to a consensus so they picked geriatric Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli to fill the void while they worked out the details of who they really wanted to be Pope.

When he announced he was convening an ecumenical council, consensus was that he would die before the start and the whole thing would be swept under the rug. Little did they know…

I have recently been to a few Vatican II seminars. Does it show? 😃
