Is it okay to support the Girl Scouts?

I support Girl Scouts for a few reasons:
  1. I am the Girl Scout leader. I’ve never been told to indoctrinate anyone about anything. We don’t do anything against Catholic teaching.
  2. Our parish (in the same diocese as St. Timothy’s) has scout troops associated with it. They were even selling cookies in front of the Church this past Sunday.
  3. The PP connection was individual troops and wasn’t the Girl Scout organization as a whole. There is no formal alliance and just because some leaders of some troops decided to do something against Catholic teaching doesn’t mean all of us do that. It’s like making all the girls and all the troops guilty of a sin committed by someone else. It’s the same flawed mentality (because a few do it… you are all guilty) that people use to wrongly paint all priests as child abusers for crying out loud.
The Bishops are investigating… and haven’t found anything yet. Just because the Church investigates something doesn’t mean the parties are already guilty. By that logic, anyone could file for annulment and get married right away because if the Church is investigating it… it must be true (in that case, the marriage null).

Congrats that you have a clean and happy little Girl Scout troop – just because you’re uneducated about what’s going on outside of your own troop, does not mean there is no issue. Is it okay to work at a Planned Parenthood that only does well-woman checks, mammogram referral and std testing, because there’s nothing bad going on there at that clinic == right? Would you be okay with that?

Why would the USCCB launch an official investigation into the Girl Scouts if there were no issues? Why have other parishes banned Girl Scouts == would you recommend those holy priests “get a freakin grip”? I’m sorry but sarcasm, name calling and “eye rolling” in response to the presentation of documented facts have never impressed me.
Because they are overly conservative. It’s not nation wide… yeah sometimes the holy priests need to get a freakin grip and understand that the whole word is not a cesspool of Planned Parenthood. My daughter was in Girl Scouts the entire time she was in Catholic School. I guess the Diocese of Charleston needs to be drawn and quartered, as does the Diocese of Springfield MA for participating in Susan G. Komen. Lots of fund raisers up there for the cure. It seems the only things that are banned and heretical are on CAF.🤷

To any parent considering staying with a Girl Scout troop because it appears to be unaffected by the immorality of it’s parent organization, remember this: All scouting organizations–GSUSA included-- are character building organizations. So your child’s participation in the organization is inherently different than that in other types of organizations that are often secular in nature. For instance, my daughter participates on various gymnastics, dance, and cheer teams–all if which are secular in nature, but none if which have the primary focus time develop her character. Though some character development occurs as she tries new things and conquers new obstacles, the primary focus of her experience is not a values based character development program. GSUSA is focused on developing your daughter’s character in a very specific way. Their efforts are INTENTIONAL.

When you enroll your child in a scouting program, you are asking for their assistance in developing that child’s character. Wouldn’t you want to choose more carefully?

Maybe so, but until I see it on FOX, EWTN… well, at least FOX… and maybe an unbiased source like, I dunno… *The Blaze *or Free Republic, no more thin mints!

This thread has been dormant for a considerable period. With rare exceptions, reviving threads after a protracted period of inactivity is discouraged because:
  • the issues that spurred them are often no longer “hot” or current topics, explaining why thread activity ceased originally.
  • posters originally involved in the discussion are sometimes no longer active on the forum and, therefore, unavailable to reply to comments added to the thread.
Our experience suggests that, when a topic merits revival, it is best accomplished by initiating a new thread that draws on recent events and can be posted to contemporaneously. This eliminates the baggage of folks being frustrated by asking and not receiving responses to issues raised in early posts (because the new poster didn’t notice that the post he was responding to was made a long time ago).

Posters are very welcome to open a new thread on the subject or any other topic, as well as to actively participate in the myriad active threads in the fora.
