Spartacus: Vengeance. Some of you may have heard about it or even seen it. Personally, I have watched both seasons and I have watched 2 episodes of the new 3:rd season.

I really like to story and the action, but today I thought of something.
Aside from just action and gore, the series also involves a lot of sex scenes and full nudity, some of which are of pre-martial sex and others are just downright twisted and sick. Frankly, I find the sex really unnecessary and I just watch the series because of the story and action. But today when I was about to watch the 3:rd episode, a thought struck me: Isn’t it considered a sin to put yourself in near occasion of sin (sex scenes and nudity)?

Also, since I am unsure if it’s sinful or not, would watching the 3:rd episode now be considered a mortal sin, since I don’t know If it’s okay for me to watch or not?

I hope it wasn’t confusing, but the whole situation has created some sort of paradox for me, which is annoying.

Is it a near occasion of sin for you? For some it may be, for others it is not. There is a certain amount of your own prudence and common sense involved and only you can really answer whether it is a near occasion of sin for you. I think you need to consider the frequency of these scenes, are they short enough that you can just skip them or cover your eyes (I use this in movies a lot), how explicit they are, and of course are they are near occasion of sin or just an occasion of sin for you? I know it’s not a straight answer but without seeing the show I can’t really judge.

Personally, I tend not to watch TV shows that have a lot of sexual scenes but it is hard to avoid them entirely since they do show up occasionally in most shows. There is sadly a huge amount of purely gratuitous sex and nudity in television nowadays. Sometimes such things are relevant to the plot or the storyline of the show but they rarely are nowadays.

I don’t watch this series, but I do watch “Mad Men” which has a lot of sexual scenes in it. I too like the plot and grew up during that time so I can identify with the characters(women) working in offices.’

But this time when it appears again, I’ve decided not to watch because of too much sex content. I’m a older woman so the sex scenes don’t act as an occasion of sin, but I am giving up watching it because of this. I’m sure things like this offend God and also if people keep watching these series and they get good ratings and awards, Hollywood will keep making them.

I’m trying to do this with other shows that also make fun of religion. Some of House episodes and others do this, so I’ve either stopped watching them altogether, or won’t watch the episodes involved.

This was a hard decision for me to make, because I love Mad Men, but feel that personally I’m not living the Catholic faith by watching them.

When something takes you away from the Lord and is disturbing to your conscience, it is wise to stay away from it.

There is good literature and movies that can take its place.
