Hello! 😃

I am an aspiring novelist, so this question is a big deal for me. I love fantasy fiction so passionately that I’ve chosen this genre as the niche I’ll be writing in, professionally; my intended audience will be teenagers and young adults. However, as a Catholic, I wonder. You’ve stated that it’s not wrong for Catholics to read fantasy – but can we write it? Can we devote entire careers to it the way an author can specialize in any other genre?

Specifically, my main concern is the issue of magic, because of the risk it has of sparking people’s interest in the occult.

I’m sure my works won’t ever feature the dangerous, malign magic that the Bible forbids. In my stories, people’s ā€œmagical powersā€ (e.g. fire-bending, healing wounds through touch, superhuman strength, etc.) will always be just an effect of the fictional world’s laws of physics and spiritual dynamics. So absolutely not something demonic and inherently wrong.

To me, fantasy magic is just imagination and intellect at play. It’s weaving a world where God created humans (and other beings) with enhanced powers of the mind and spirit that allow people to do all kinds of cool and awesome things. Ultimately, it’s just entertainment. (Though I do want to sprinkle my stuff with some neat Christian messages, too.)

Considering all this… what’s your verdict? Can I become a full-time fantasy writer and still walk up to Communion every Sunday with a clean conscience?
