Is it permissable to leave out the pennitential rite?

The Mass I have attended for years has been consistantly leaving this out.
Consistant enough that this past week, when it was said by a visiting Bishop, people stumbled through this unfamiliar prayer.
In fact, I cannot remember a time when it was said last with our normal parish priest.

The explanation we were provided is that it had to do with the liturgical calendar and the year that we were in.

Not knowing any better, I accepted this.
However this past week a visiting bishop said Mass, and the penitential rite was said.

So now I am disbelieving the first explanation tossed out…and wondering if I am being shorted the full benefit of a Mass said properly.

Anyone?

Do you mean the entire penitential rite is left out or just the confiteor?

The Confiteor is one option for the penitential rite.

The options (taken from ourcatholicfaith.org/mass/penitentialrite.html) -
Penitential Rite
A
I confess to almighty God
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have sinned through my own fault
  • we strike our breast -
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done,
and in what I have failed to do;
and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin,
all the angels and saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord our God.
May almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us our sins,
and bring us to everlasting life.
  • the Kyrie may then be sung -
B
Lord, we have sinned against you:
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, show us your mercy and love.
And grant us your salvation.
May almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us our sins,
and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.

C
  • Lord Jesus is acclaimed in praise, and we respond -
…: Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
…: Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.
…: Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
May almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us our sins,
and bring us to everlasting life.
Skipping the entire rite is never acceptable. One of the options must be done.

The Penitential Rite may be replaced by the Sprinkling Rite or by the beginning of the Baptismal Rite if Baptism will be celebrated during the Mass.

Thanks! I forgot about those when I posted. I was thinking more along the lines of the “typical Sunday Mass”, but since the bishop was there, it’s quite possible it wasn’t one.

Well, none of the options are exercised.
So what would be the least confrontational way to get this handled?

As to the Mass this past week, the bishop was merely passing through traveling elsewhere for a vacation. There was nothing outstanding about the Mass, other then the presence of the penitential rite (and a bishop).

do you mean there is no penitential rite whatever on Sundays where it is not replaced by an RCIA or baptism rite for instance? the priest goes directly from the Opening prayer to the Collect? Or do you mean you have used one of the alternate forms for so long that people have forgotten the first form with the confetior?

None of the forms you have listed are familiar at all.

We go straight from greeting to gloria.

Just an update for all.

Our pennitential rite has made a reappearance.🙂

Father had occasion to say Mass for the Hispanic community, and needed to brush up on Spanish. After a while, he started sliding in foreign languages into the Mass.

As of this past Sunday Father has been doing the Pennitential rite in Greek, the sermon in English, and the Eucharistic prayers in both Latin and English.

The Penitential Rite may NEVER be omitted at Mass. The Profession of Faith may be omitted during daily Mass during the week, but not if a Holy Day or Feast Day occurs during the week ~ it must be included. But the Penitential Rite must always be included in every Mass. To omit the Penitential Rite is an act of pride, for we must absolutely humble ourselves before God, and admit our sinfulness and above all, no priest may change or delete or exclude or whatever word you wish to use, what the rubrics of the Mass call for. The Confiteor may be substituted with “Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy…”, and there doesn’t need to be any additional prayers added to “Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy…”, but the Penitential Rite itself may not be omitted. It is as much a part of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass as the readings and consecration.

That means you’re also missing the Kyrie.
Kindly ask your priest why there hasn’t been any pennitential rite at Mass. Your next move will depend on the answer he gives you.

The Penitential Rite can be replaced by the Sprinkling Rite or by the greeting for the Rite of Baptism or the greeting Rite for Marriage or some other rites of the RCIA.

That’s excellent. It’s quite proper to say the kyrie in Greek. And Latin is important in our rite and also permitted and even recommended. It’s a good thing the homily is in English though.👍

Why is it that many people come to these forums complaining about their priests not having done this and not having done that and committed this or the other abuse?
For me that shows a judgemental attitude and a disrespect for the priest.
Don’t any of them have the common sense and courtesy to personally talk to the priest about their concerns instead of running behind their backs in this cowardly manner??

Perhaps you missed reading through the entirety of this thread.
Allow me to recap for you.

I was uncertain if what was being done was correct, and asked others for opinons (no judgement on my part or on the part of others).
After learning what I needed to know, I asked what the least confrontational way this should be handled. (Again, no judgement, and with a recognition that this must be handled properly and likely privately)
And later, the problem corrected itself, perhaps through prayers of the very people on this thread.

This is hardly a ‘cowardly’ manner to do things, it is an entirely acceptable way to learn.
Again, perhaps you missed the majority of this thread, no one here is being judgemental, confrontational, or disrespectful.
Instead this is an avenue to resolving a perceived problem in the proper manner.

Thanks very much for you concern though.
Where matters involving the Mass are concerned, we should all be on the watch for our behavior and intention.
