Is it possible for a non-catholic to become a godparent?

Is it possible for a non catholic to become a godparent? My daughter in law says no, but I believe that non catholics may be christian witness - is this so? Also, would an unmarried couple be suitable as godparents provided they are catholics? This is a difficult debate, and one we cannot find an answer to. Surely the catholic church would not endorse a couple, with children, who have never married, to be godparents. Please explain, and also why a good person, who is non catholic, may not be a godparent. It is a difficult one? Pollyd.
