Many of the Katrina victims were given relatively substantial amounts of cash in the form of debit cards. Stories came out soon after about the purchase of luxury/entertainment items. Here, snopes deals with the rumors…

What we asking for is cites. We frequently ask for cites on CAF, to back up what people say. I bet if you did a google, you would find the cite you’re looking for, froma reliable source.

Well, we are all given free will, to choose or not choose God, to choose which of God/s commandments we will obey or not. Sounds like a lot of stealing.

The people I knew that our parish helped during Katrina, and the people Iknew who lived there on my own, all seemed to use that money to get by, if they got it. And if th government was so free with the food stamps that they gave them out indiscriminantly, well, while I don’t agree people should waste the food stamps, I think by not checking who really needed them, that’s a bad government issue.

What grocery offers lap dances??? Food stamps usually come on an electronic card, are not real stamps, and have to come off through an EBT card reader. It would seem the so-called rich in your scenario at least used them for the proper purpose.

Yes there were plenty of cases like that one. I personally know a doctor that spent the debit card 2,000 on a big screen TV. He didn’t even evacuate for the storm and had zero damage. Katrina is actually a good test to look at as to what money does to people. I know of at least one person (wealthy) that received the 2,000 and gave it to someone less fortunate. Most people used it to pay for hotel bills and real evacuation expenses. It was the bad eggs that made the headlines by spending it on luxury items. You throw 2,000 at a million people and things like this are bound to happen. Because of some snafu I didn’t get a penny. I did evacuate and had about 800.00 worth of expenses because of the storm. I put family up for about a month and a half until they got their lives in order. It was a blessing at first. They actually treated me like family. Now I’m a bit bitter because I’m back to being the low wage earning teacher and I’m treated like scum. I hope I earned some points in heaven. Yes I would do it again if asked. They are family even if they would rather not claim me.

They are few and far between. I know of a couple that struck it rich when oil was discovered on their land. They lived in a very small little house and had a backyard garden. Guess what? That is still where they live even though they are worth millions.

It got pretty disgusting watching what people spent their FEMA money on. I remember waiting in line at the grocery and very well dressed people with diamond rings etc… pulling out their welfare cards buying steaks etc… I guess many felt after paying taxes their whole lives, they wanted a little payback. We put up two families. 10 people for Katrina for over a month ( We were the lucky ones that still had our house completely in tact so we put up family) and 3 people for Rita. I’m not rich and having that many extra people in my home hurt but what you going to do? One of the family members did really well between FEMA and the Road Home money. They went from a modest three bedroom home to a really nice house with a pool in an exclusive area. I actually wish we would have been flooded out. I was treated like dirt by my wives family before the storm ( I’m a lowly teacher ), they were very nice after Katrina, now I’m back to being dirt. 😦 That is the nature of people.
I thought of this thread as I read the reflection on today’s mass readings… www.wau.org Please read it when you get a chance, igator. It might help you to see that even the wealthy who are corrupt, need God’s mercy more than ever. We can be instruments of the mercy. :o

And Warren Buffet is still alive! As is Bill Gates. As is a bunch of othr people with money who try to help and believe in good works. While Bono is not my favorite person, he is also an example of a person with money who tries to make things better.
yes indeed–I just think that when people have issues with wealthy people, and lump them into a category of ‘corrupt wrong doers’…I just can’t help but think they are envious to a degree. Envy and its cousins, can rear its ugly head in a myriad of forms…I have been envious before, and often times, I would point out the ‘bad’ in those I was envious of…but, you know what? I was the one who needed to change my thinking, and realize that God’s mercy is for everyone, and that if a person who has immense wealth is doing ‘bad’ things with it, or to earn it, then that person(s) needs God’s mercy more than ever. It can anger us when we see so much greed and corruption among the great and powerful wealthy, but again–they need God’s mercy. And, I now pray for their souls, instead of condemn them.:o It is PERFECTLY OKAY, to want to see justice if a person has found ways to become wealthy at the expense of others, or is terribly greedy–BUT…we must be careful that our desire for justice, doesn’t turn to anger and bitterness.

I pray for my friends and my enemies.

You guys wouldn’t be hurt by that happening to you? Please tell me the prayer to heal that wound.:ouch:
1.) I am not God this week. I will never be God, in fact. It is up to Him to judge those who decided to use their Katrina money for other purposes.🤷 I am ticked at FEMA, and the federal government, for just unleashing my tax dollars out there like that. I have entered it into my “tabs” file and RSS. But I can’t change the past. I can do what I can for the future. Being PO’d is not going to help.
2.) I have been gypped, so to speak, lots of times. I am arguing with the State of Illinois, who thinks I owe them money from 18 years ago (you read that right, 18 years) and kept the money I receive for driving my kids back and forth to school myself. Getting angry isn’t going to solve the situation. Persistence and insistence is.

I have lived through a divorce, a decree of nullity, a new marriage, raised a child with special needs, had public accusations of my ability to parent, been mistreated, misunderstood by extended family, had financial ups and downs, had to take custody of my grandchildren and evenutally adopt them, have a shaky relationship with my adult daughter who is bipolar and an alcoholic, had some damage to my public reputation, almost lost my husband to a disease that should have killed him.

Holding a grudge, ranting and raving, feeling pity for myself- It didn’t do a thing to help the situation. Squaring my shoulders and doing what is feasible, and accepting what I can’t fix, giving it to God- that’s what works.

People who are out to be sinful, rich or poor, I have no time to deal with them. I have to be concerned about moi and my soul.

I have a big question to ask you from my heart. When you feel wronged, shunned and hurt, what do you do? I think I need some major healing.

I sulk, whine, rant, plot revenge to the tenth power, then fling myself on God’s mercy. Yesterday I found myself praying for someone who ‘hurt’ me—to my astonishment.

1.) Punch things, like a punching bag or pillows.
2.) Stomp.
3.) Cry. This is supposedly because I am female, but my brothers have been known to do so out of frustration, so I guess I’d do it even if I was a guy.
4.) Remind myself that I am not going to get out of being shunned, wronged or hurt by punching, stomping, and crying.
5.) Pull myuself together and remind myself I am well over 18, and responsible for my own life.
6.) Pray. That’s the point where I pray.

It really is against our nature isn’t it? Without God it would “REVENGE”! Good for you and may God bless you. 😃

Sure it is, but you have to slap us really hard on the back while doing so, with a beer in the other hand.
😃
