I have a quick question. Is it a sin to love your married spouse as much as God? Not more than, but as much as.

no love others as you love “yourselves”…love God above all don’t love anyone anything else in the same level of God, not even above Him…

Possible? Yes. It’s possible to love your spouse more than you love God. If it’s possible to love your spouse more than, it’s also possible to love him/her as much as.

Sin? Ask your confessor. I think Jesus’ commandments are pretty clear on the order of priorities. Put anything on equal footing with God, and you’re not loving him above all else. On the other hand, romantic love is a powerful force and might feel stronger than love of God for a while… at that point the question might be how you’re making your choices and who is honored by them.

answered in a couple of different ways

The hierarchy of love is God first and foremost. That is never to be confused or diminished.
After that, then love neighbor as oneself. The creator is never to take 2nd seat. Never put creation above the creator.

I don’t think that is possible.
I agree.

We have to remember that we use the English word “love” for many different things, which in other languages (like Greek) have multiple words.

The type of love we have for our spouses is typically “Eros” (though it can also be a mix of both agape too). However, we don’t have eros love for God. The type of love we have for God is called Agape.

If we “agape” other things more than we “agape” God, we are breaking the First Commandment.

In total, there are 4 kinds of love: storge, philia, eros, and agape. Plus, there are 3 others that psychologists name, but they don’t match up with the Christian definition of “love” because they are not self giving. The other 3 can be very unhealthy and sinful.

God Bless

How about “love your God through your spouse?” For he or she is the great gift God created for you.

Hi Joey,

Yes, that happens when we develop both Eros and Agape for our spouse, which
is ideal.

God Bless

The hierarchy of love is

Love God with your whole heart mind and soul.

THEN

Love your neighbor as yourself

We don’t love the creature or creation above the creator of all.

Then again, to love an extraordinary gift is to love the giver of the Gift. As I said, a spouse is a great gift from a loving Creator.
I’m just thinking of what Jesus said in Luke 14:26 “If any one comes to me and does not hate ( μισέω ) his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple"… ( μισέω ) = [http://bibleapps.com/greek/3404.htm]. IOW love of God must be greater than love for the creature or creation.
