Is it possible to never commit Mortal sin?

Anything is possible with the grace of God.

I’ve heard pious stories about certain saints like St. Joseph or St. John the Baptist as having been actually cleansed from Original Sin in utero, and then never committing an actual sin in their life. Now, whether or not such stories are true, I don’t think we can know. But it is at least possible that it could have happened this way.

Note, that this is fundamentally different from what happened to Mary. Mary was preserved from ever having Original Sin at all. These pious legends assert that these saints did have Original Sin, but that it was wiped away before they were even born.

My son is severely autistic and non-verbal. If things continue as they seem likely to continue, it seems unlikely to me that he will ever be capable of the “full knowledge” component necessary for a sin to be mortal. That’s comforting to me considering I’m still working on exactly how he’d even go to Confession considering he is non-verbal.

Mortal sin is a grave sin that is done intentionally when you KNOW it is a grave sin. You cannot ever ever EVER accidentally commit mortal sin.

If you choose to commit a grave sin, make an act of contrition and get to Confession.

Hi, I’m 73 and a life long Catholic

Here is what you need to know:

While ONLY Mortal sins are absolutely required to be confessed [READ 1 Jn 1:56-6; 1 Jn 5: 16-17 & John 20:1923];
One merits actual grace by going to Confession often, even IF ONE has NO Mortal sins to confess.

As we get Older, we DO get wiser. We naturally seek all the grace opportunities that GOD makes available to us.

As to you’re OPQ…

YES it is possible to go without sinning Mortally; countless saints have done so.; but doing so REQUIRES Grace.

Mortal sin has some conditions on it. Only you can know if you freely willed it and knew it was seriously wrong at the time. Except for God, who knows exactly what is what in your heart. A priest can help you with discerning that if you don’t have much training with figuring it out. It is your heart that matters, not what a family member or teacher or boss thinks was in your heart.

But you may mean, what if I disagree with authorities about the gravity of Surrogacy or Wishing great harm to ones neighbor or Fornication? This may or may not land in your lap, depending. We have a duty to learn the truth and when we don’t know something is wrong because we tried to end up ignorant or deliberately ignored our moral instruction, we are responsible for that. Also, what authority? That might be something you honestly haven’t worked out yet, which may take time, and not be your fault at this moment. But humans are remarkably good at kidding ourselves about what we know. We have an innate ability to know what a serious sin is. Faith helps us more easily know some things, though.

Me personally, I’m on the hook for stuff that is grave sin even if I haven’t figured out the real essence of why the Church teaches it is grave. That’s because I know I ought to listen to the teaching.

I am asking whether or not it is possible to go out without ever committing mortal sin. I know that mortal sin takes three requirements, knowledge, intent, and free will. so technically it seems possible to never commit sin, yet I see people in their like 70’s at the confessional all the time. does God know we are going to stumble over and over, or does he expect us not to?
Yes, per dogma of faith from the Council of Trent, once one is justified.

One can regularly confess venial sins.

Is it possible to never commit Mortal sin? Yes.

However, I’m only aware of one human, for sure, who never committed a Mortal sinned (other that Jesus): The Blessed Mother - and she never sinned, period. No venial and no mortal sins.

Some believe that St. Joseph was also Immaculate, though that’s not dogma.

And then there are some saints, like St. Therese of Lisieux, who most likely never committed a mortal sin (though she did have venial sins)

But, for the most part: all of us have committed at least one mortal sin and some of us commit them often.

God Bless

Oh, I’m thinking that there are many more than you’re giving it credit for.

How about the hundreds of millions who have died before attaining the “age of reason”, including those who were aborted? No. Mortal. Sin. 😉

@gorgias

Of course you are correct. I was really just thinking about adults, and
not the blessed young children, babies, pre-born who have died

God Bless

At my last confession I confessed just venial sins and then admitted," Father, I’m just a mess". He laughed but understood what I was talking about…venial sins can be tough to deal with, too.

It is possible to have never committed mortal sin. It is even possible to have never committed any deliberate venial sin.
I believe this is called being “confirmed in grace”.
For example, tradition holds that St. Joseph and St. John the Baptist were both confirmed in grace.
I believe St. Aloysius Gonzaga was also confirmed I grace.

What I keep in mind is that it is not my opinion that determines whether something is a sin. It is whether or not the act goes against the will of God. The Church helps us to understand that will and conform to it.

Not for a man…
🤨

We’ve already named saints and individuals (like those with mental defects) who likely did not/could not commit a mortal sin.

It’s very much possible.

Venial sin, not so much. But yes, it is possible to avoid mortal sin in one’s life–perhaps one’s whole life. Rarer than the rarest diamond, but possible.

REPLYING to the OP-QUESTION

Is it “possible”

Yes it’s possible; but perhaps unlikely for MOST of humanity.

Which is WHAT CHRIST Knew & why He Instituted the SEVEN Sacraments; notably HERE Sacramental Confession John 20:19-23, and the Most Holy [Christ Himself] Eucharist

What an AWESOME God we have:grinning:
