Hello!

I was wondering if anyone had a link to a site or know of a book that provides the documents from the church councils? So, rather than reading someone’s summary of what came from the council, I can just read the documents myself.

Thanks

This site will give you the docs for the past 800 or so years.

I’ve used piar.hu/councils on many occasions. I do not know the source for the English translations of these Councils, but I have never had reason to suspect that the translations are not faithful.

Before you even try to locate these documents, I would strongly advise that you become completely fluent in Latin. The reason being that you cannot trust that the English translations of them that you find on the internet are accurate. The only translations you can trust will have a “Nihil Obstat” signed by a Bishop or other church authority.

‘Decrees of the Ecumenical Councils’ by Norman P Tanner

it has the Latin (or Greek) side by side with an English Translation, been reviewed by scholars favourably (basically meaning Professor Tanners translation was checked out, but he is reputable on Church History), but the price of the 2 volumes is steep about £120-£140. While they are expensive, they contain all 21 Ecumenical Councils from Nicaea I to Vatican II

Do you have a link for the documents in Latin?
No, sorry. I had two years of high school Latin, so I have a very basic understanding, but that is all. Of course, several Councils were promulgated in Greek (such as the Council of Nicea and the First Council of Constantinople, the first two Ecumenical Councils, which gave us the so-called Nicene Creed that we recite every Sunday). So, in some cases, the Latin is itself a translation.
